“The first announced event is a double feature of Babe: Pig in the City and Eyes Wide Shut, to be introduced by Noah Baumbach.” – on the new arthouse theatre, The Metrograph, opening in NYC

That quote comes from the piece Jordan Hoffman wrote on The Metrograph, the new arthouse theatre opening in Manhattan (the first new one to appear in decades). (Serious Trekkies will probably recognize Jordan’s name. I mean …)

First of all, that double bill alone tells you that America still needs its arthouse theatres. Where else could you see those movies back to back on the big screen, introduced by … Noah Baumbach?? It also tells you that the opening of the Metrograph is one of the most exciting pieces of film news in Manhattan to come along since I’ve moved here.

I’m already signed up to attend a bunch of press screenings for their initial offerings, and I am so excited to go check it out. The theatre has a balcony. You can watch the projectionist thread the film (because they will be devoted to showing films in 35mm as much as possible) into the camera. It sounds like it’s being done right, and I am determined to support it as much as I can, the same way I support the Film Forum, Museum of the Moving Image, and the other small venues in New York.

Interesting double bill. I’m not sure that I see the correlation but I’m willing to be enlightened.

I know – I’m sure Noah Baumbach picked them both, which is hilarious to me. It makes me think of what I’d choose for my own double bill.
