This is a beautiful piece, Sheila. Truly she was one of the sharpest and wittiest writers out there, a Jonathan Swift by way of Beverly Hills. Her situation – from the time she was a kid, even – could have made her bitter; instead she was warm and funny. She will be so missed.

When she was doing promo for The Force Awakens she was on a talk show with Daisy Ridley, and told a story of a fan who informed her that he’d thought of her every day when he was a teenager. “Did you?” she asked. “Sure,” he said. “For fifteen minutes or so.” Then she turns to a horrified Daisy and says, “so you have that to look forward to.”

    What a dame.

Thank you for this. It’s just heartbreaking to lose so many uniquely talented people this year.

It’s rare a celebrity death makes me cry, often a deep sadness if I loved their work but this is different. It feels like a cornerstone of the stories I loved and the women I admire and want to be is gone. And this hurts, badly.

  5. Helena says:

I’m so glad it was you who got to write this and so sad you had to write it.

    What a sad, sad year.

  6. Todd Restler says:

Lovely tribute Sheila. So sad, and the timing is so weird, as the digitally created young Leia is gracing screens everywhere in Rogue One. You mentioned the Harry Met Sally role and basically took the words out of my mouth. I thought she was the key to the movie, which I love. What a year. Definitely a world coming to the end vibe right now. Happy and healthy New Year Sheila, I treasure your blog.

  7. Abigail says:

Hannah and her Sisters is possibly my favourite film, and she’s so good in it. And she has one of my favourite lines ever, in When Harry Met Sally, “Someone is staring at you in Personal Growth”. You have to see it to appreciate it. And now Debbie Reynolds has joined her. So sad.

  8. Barb says:

This is beautiful, Sheila. Thanks for this.

(Will this year finally end? So many wonderful performers and writers–and my family has been hit hard, too. Because of travelling distances, and other barriers, I had never up to this year attended a loved one’s funeral. This year, I attended 4. I guess, in the end, we have the stories, the memories, and the images–right?)
