Sometimes you’re in the right place at the right time. I suppose now that everyone has a camera on them at all times in their phone, this is less true now. But this was a non-digital camera, and I usually had it on me – particularly in the beginning months when I was working at 30 Rock. I found the whole area so iconic and so interesting, and it took me a while to “get over” the fact that I worked there. One day on my lunch break, the Marine Corps band was finishing up a concert in the plaza across the street from 30 Rock. I watched the gleaming glittering Marines – they almost looked like toy soldiers – carrying their gleaming horns – walk back to their bus. And this is the picture I took. Just one. You only need one.

Ooooh, the Marine Band! I never tire of banging the drum for the Marine Band. That’s not just some marching band or a bunch of people who play “Stars and Stripes Forever” and “Hail to the Chief” when the President goes someplace. The Marine Band’s musicians are highly trained professionals who undergo an audition process every bit as rigorous as those of major symphony orchestras. Those musicians are every bit as good as the folks who play in the New York Philharmonic, the Met Opera orchestra, the Boston Symphony, you name it. They are magnificent and I have never felt they get anywhere near the musical love they should get in this country! (This is a great photo, by the way!)

Yes! It’s similar to the West Point Band – my cousin is in the West Point Band (he plays trumpet) – and these are serious musicians!

I hadn’t thought about this but you are right!
have you written any pieces about the Marine Band?
I have, but looking at it now it’s a really old post and I’m going to update it a bit. Stay tuned!
Looking forward to it!
