    That’s what I was thinking, but I couldn’t put it together.

    I read it so long ago. It’s interesting that the first sentence has a plural narrator – “we” – kind of sets up the whole thing.

    What helps give it away (in addition to the mention of one of the title words)is the fact that the story is told in the present tense. I read it a long time ago, too, but the impression it made on me is indelible.
