It was a queer, sultry summer, the summer they electrocuted the Rosenbergs, and I didn’t know what I was doing in New York.

This was bugging me, so I looked it up. (Won’t say – that would be cheating.)It was bugging me because at first when I read this I thought for some reason it was Sophie’s Choice. That Southern narrator dude who lived with her in the house in Brooklyn.
Clearly it’s not. But it’s interesting what directions you go in when you are not sure.
For some reason Truman Capote is shouting in my head.. not sure of the title – In Cold Blood?
Anne – weird. Not to be TOO autistic, but the first line of Sophie’s Choice is quite similar to this one.
Nope – not In Cold Blood.
and not Capote either.. that’s just my head… I may return to this one.
Right era.. wrong ‘journalism’… but a bell rang none the less – The Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath?
Yup – The Bell Jar.
