Richmond Snapshots

Despite a wrong turn searching for gas which led me directly to the gates of Quantico (I had to turn around and back up), I arrived safely. Right in time for a gorgeous chilly sunset beaming off the buildings of this beautiful city. I’m wiped out. I think I walked six miles yesterday. I showed the really nice guy at the front desk the things I wanted to see. He had given me a whole welcome package with an awesome street map. He pointed out the locations on the map. I asked him if it was “walkable”. He said, “Oh, no. It’s about two miles.” Just one of the many cultural differences between living in NYC and living somewhere else which is more of a car culture. Two miles? I’M WALKIN’ HERE. Granted, by the end of the day, I thought: “Yeah. That’s enough walking.” But it was great because by walking I really got a feel for the city and its beauty and its symmetry (I love how it is laid out). But here are some snapshots from lovely Richmond.

Needless to say, I am in Founding Fathers heaven.

I mean, I get into my hotel room, look out the window and see this?

God’s in His heaven, all’s right with the world.

Very cool – what were those two gorgeous ceilings?

What was the impetus for your trip, Sheila? I feel like I missed something. (Granted, that’s how I feel most of the time.)

  2. sheila says:

No, you didn’t miss anything. :) I just didn’t announce what I was doing or why anywhere (not really my thing).

This was my impetus, but I did a hell of a lot more. I’ll write about it once I’m rested!! I love Richmond!

Both of those ceilings are at the Jefferson Hotel which – along with the Peabody in Memphis – is the most beautiful hotel I’ve ever seen. Never seen anything like it in my life.

Happy travels (from Envious in Florida!)

BTW: That book on the Hayride (Horace Logan’s memoir) I mentioned a couple of weeks ago is excellent. Among many other things a great insight into the rivalry between the Hayride and the Opry. And also the definitive answer to whether Elvis might have ever even possibly considered playing the Opry again (answer: Hell no.)
….Plus the occasional southernism like “didn’t know his butt from a bass fiddle.” I think you would definitely enjoy it.

Andre auditioned at VCU for the music program two weeks ago – so a few of those photos look very familiar! Did you see the sign that said, “Free straw with every drink”?

  6. sheila says:

Betsy – hahaha No, I didn’t – but I loved seeing the trumpet student – I walked right by the Musical Theatre building!!

  7. Kent says:

WOW untouched Georgian Federalism under glass!! Gorgeous shots, Sheila! The King meets The Founding Fathers of The Republic. What a walking tour!

  8. Donna in Austin says:

Is it just me or is anyone else having a Posiden Adventure flashback with your second picture? It looks like the ceiling of the ship which becomes the floor that many fall to after the wave flips the boat.

Great snapshots. It was that first shot of the Federal Reserve Building that caught my eye. Even though I see that building almost every day, the dark clouds behind it like smoke in the photo gave me an odd September 11 sensation. The building is by the same designer as the WTC, with a similar (but smaller) look, so I guess that’s why.

Regarding the John Marshall, you probably already know this, but Elvis specifically references this hotel on FTD’s 48 Hours To Memphis, one of his 1974 Richmond Coliseum concerts.

Glad you were able to make it out here to Richmond before Elvis At 21 leaves later this month. Looking forward to your coverage.
