In watching the film again, I was struck by the fact that both characters have deep connections with elderly people, he with the man he moves in the nursing home, she with her grandmother. There is no fear of the elderly, just compassion and also a respect for experience and a long life lived. It is one of the subtle elements of the script that really helps make the film.
My review of Blue Valentine.
Harrowing, wasn’t it?
I’d love to read your thoughts on “Take This Waltz.” It was one of those movies where my friend and I just had to sit in the car and discuss it after we saw it. I love movies like that, where it affects you so much that you need to speak about it.
Yes, I saw that! I went with my friend Michele – and the movie stayed with me a long time. I liked it for its 70s-ish quality, in terms of the lead female. She was a foreigner in the world, she didn’t fit anywhere. And of course, the wonderful Luke Kirby – who I already knew was awesome because of his stint on Slings and Arrows. I have been meaning to write about the film, thanks for the reminder!
I thought I would add this link here where the writer makes a connection between the famous Lloyd Dobler and Dean in Blue Valentine:
