My kids and I sing that one. Mr. Morton’s inability to express himself to the object of his affection always clutches at me, even now.

  2. red says:

    Yes!!! Me too!

  3. Gypsy says:

I did this in Schoolhouse Rock Live!! I had the most fun EVER doing that show.

    I was the cat. :)

I love Schoolhouse Rock… and a DVD set of another childhood obsession showed up today – Electric Company v2.

  5. mere says:

oh I have the VHS of all the Grammar rock videos. I love them. Conjunction Junction?? Interjections?? so when you’re happy HOORAY, or sad AAWWW or frightened EEK, or mad DRAT or excited…WOW(groovy hippie girl) or..well you know..
Saturday mornings are not the same as they used to be.

Those were so funny, and so sweet, and so nicely done. When I hear educators talking about making up rap songs (usually pretty horrible rap songs) to try to make stuff “relevant” to kids, I think nostalgically of Schoolhouse Rock…it didn’t really try to be the most up-to-the-minute idiom (some of the styles were very jazzy, and some were kind of country-folk), but it WORKED.

I can still recite the Preamble to the Constitution thanks to Schoolhouse Rock (and yes, I know the one tiny alteration they made).

I wonder what it was that made it work so well? Was it the talent, or the time it was made, or what? I look at “modern” educational stuff and a lot of it is crap compared to SHR.

Mere – do you remember the one about a “bill”? He’s just a bill trying to turn into a law. It’s so so funny!!!

I think I need to buy Schoolhouse Rock – it was so fun to relive all of it, and I was amazed at how much I had retained.

  8. red says:

    ricki –

I don’t know. If kids love rap, and they can learn thru rap songs, then whatever – I think that’s great. Who cares? I don’t anyway.

Doesn’t take away from the cool-ness of Schoolhouse Rock, because nothing could. Cool-ness such as that is eternal!

I prefer to celebrate on my blog. That’s pretty much always my point here. Most posts are celebrating SOMEthing. Just my personal preference.

  9. mere says:

I’m just a bill, yes I’m only a bill and I’m sitting here on Captital hill…
And I love Unpack your Adjectives. and the groovy verb song.

this site has all the songs and lyrics

  10. red says:

Lolly, Lolly, Lolly, get your adverbs here!

    hahahahahaha

I love that site, mere – when you open up each page the song plays!!

  11. red says:

And the whole song about “No more kings”?? Member the king of England perched on his throne across the Atlantic, pooh-poohing the tea in the harbor and stuff?

  12. mere says:

isn’t that great? too bad they don’t play the whole song.

  13. red says:

I need to buy the album. I really do.

    “Mr. Morton WAAAAAAAAAASSSS….”

    hahahaha

I love that guy’s voice too. The schoolhouse rock voice. Kinda Randy Newman-ish, kinda BB King-ish.

  14. Eric the...bald says:

Hope this isn’t too risque, but I just read a funny about Jack Sheldon, the jazz trumpeter whose voice you hear in I’m Just a Bill and Conjunction Junction. He lent his voice to a bit on Family Guy (which I find hysterical) where they were doing a sex education thing to the tune of Conjunction Junction. It contained these lyrics: “Vagina junction, what’s your function? Taking in sperm and spitting out babies.” This guy must have one good sense of humor.

  15. red says:

Eric – HA! I never heard that!! We watched a little “making of” documentary that was on the DVD – and it was so funny to actually SEE the guy who sings all those songs.

  16. nightfly says:

Hello cat – you look good!

And, of course, there was the Amendment Song on the Simpsons (sung by Sheldon himself):

    I’m an amendment to be
    Yes, an amendment to be
And I’m hoping that they’ll ratify me
    See, there’s a lot of flag-burners
And they got too much freedom
So I wanna make it legal
    For policemen to beat ’em

What if they say you’re not good enough to be in the Constitution?

Then I’ll crush all opposition to me
And I’ll make Ted Kennedy pay
    If he fights back
    I’ll say that he’s gaaaaaaayyyyy

I have the boxed set on CD and listen to it all the time – at work and everything.

  17. Sharon Ferguson says:

Had SO MUCH FUN introducing SHR to my daughter – my own favorites were “No More Kings” and “The Preamble” and “Interplanet Janet.” and the one for the Number Eight…
