I love this photo. Judging from the chalkboard, with Alice Ghostley’s name on it – and Maggie Smith’s – it’s some Academy Awards moment … is she on tour? Why does she have the notes in front of her? She looks like she’s backstage somewhere … but I don’t recognize the outfit. Help is appreciated.

it almost looks as if she’s watching herself in “hello dolly” on the t.v. monitor….
Wait – you’re right – the monitor was a blur to me until you said that. Now I see the big Dolly hat.
a. it is the oscars..the year after she won…she was presenting Best Actor..she gave it to John Wayne for True Grit…Hello Dolly was up for lots of tech awards..so thye must have caught her backstage watching a monitor as they announced the nominees in a tech/costume category.
b. her name is spelled wrong in the caption…can a legend catch a break??????
c.http://cache.viewimages.com/xc/3132656.jpg?v=1&c=ViewImages&k=2&d=BEDFE2929D4DA7657B7937DD7939EA04A55A1E4F32AD3138
I love you, Mitchell. I seriously put up this post about half an hour ago and here you show up with a scholarly treatise.
I LOVE that picture you sent!! Her outfit is just adorable, I think. And look at him!
i know…old guard and new guard in a moment of mutual respect…kills me!
La Streisand’s outfit is another Arnold Scaasi, following her (not really) see-through one the year before. It was completely lined in nude jersey. Total Daisy Gamble from “On a Clear Day . . . ” Barbra presented the best actor Oscar to John Wayne for True Grit! Hello, Dolly went on to win 3 Oscars, and Maggie Smith won for Brodie.
P.S.: Scaasi is backwards for Isaacs, Arnold’s real last name. Great idea, eh, YellaM’O? Just call me Elsilrac. Wow, we sound like characters from Lord of the Rings!
xxx Stevie
I have the best friends in the world.
That is all.
I know the see-thru dress but hadn’t seen this one – please tell me: what color was it?? I am thinking pink like Jackie O in Dallas that day – but am I wrong?
yes pink..i found a color pic.
http://i.imdb.com/Photos/Mptv/1033/1812_0028.jpg
What a lovely rack, I have to say.
i love u Stevie..we must meet someday…we were clearly seperated at birth!..btw..beyonce and tina turner are about to duet on the grammy’s
Get ready, Mitchell, ’cause it’s gonna happen! xxx Stevie
. . . and by the way, Sheila, WE are the lucky ones :) Love you. And you’re right, Barbra’s rockin those 60′s titties. (blush) xxx
Mitchell – is amy winehouse performing via satellite? I have no TV – I’m bummed. Let me know. Girl is up for every award under the sun!!
Stevie – and her hat! I love the hat!
yes..amy will sing live by sattelite from London
yes..stevie..we are the lucky ones..this is how lucky i am…Ms. Billings will be here in one week AND we are having a sleepover the night before i get to sit and worship her as she sings with Honey West(who u would LOVE)…and then 2 weeks later Ms. O’ Malley will be sharing my bed for a whole week…my word..i am blessed!
Why can’t I be there already???
Mr. Fain – I envy you, my friend. xxx S
just get in a cab right now..go to the airport and get here NOW!!!
Please tell me what Alice Ghostley was up for? Or was she “accepting” for someone? I am trying to decipher the code.
Yes, Alice Ghostley was scheduled to accept the award on Maggie Smith’s behalf, and she did. Interesting choice!
xxx Stevie
/[Alice Ghostley] was a good friend of Maggie Smith, a fellow New Faces alumna â Smith made her Broadway début in New Faces of 1956 â and when Smith won the Oscar for her performance in The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie and was unable to attend the ceremony, Ghostley accepted the award on her behalf./
God, I love the internet! Thank you, Al Gore!
xxx Stevie
Very interesting choice! I wonder why.
And what is the name at the bottom? It looks like Joan Blondell to me but that can’t be right.
EXCELLENT work from you – you found that information in 2.3 seconds.
Thank you, Al Gore! hahahahahaha
It says, “Jean Brodie,” I think. Wouldn’t it have been great if Joan Blondell received a lifetime achievement award or something? Sigh. I remember once when Merle Oberon made a presentation sometime in the 70′s with a HUGE emerald and diamond necklace that put Elizabeth Taylor to shame – looking JUST GORGEOUS!!!! I’m gonna look for that picture now!
xxx
yeah, alice, maggie, paul lynde, kaye ballard…all old school pals.
Oh of course – DUH – Jean Brodie!
I looooove Joan Blondell. I love her from back in the 30s – but then she has an awesome role in Cassavetes’ opening night – as the playwright watching this crazy company of actors ruin her play. Have you seen it, Stevie?? It’s one of my favorite movies – Gena Rowlands is OUT. of this WORLD … but Blondell is just awesome. She brings Gena Rowlands, the lead actress, to see her psychic – maybe that will help Rowlands play the part …
I love that Cassavetes cast her. This old workhorse from the earliest days of Hollywood. Good for her.
btw..amy is KILLING it on the grammy’s!
Is she winning everything?
Good for her, man. She deserves it. That album is one of the best albums I’ve heard in years.
she is!
she just won Record of the year…bless her cracked out heart!
Couldn’t find the pic of Merle, but this one looks like a good time – Madame Rose, Mrs. Miniver, and the exotic Merle.
http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a42/12luckypenny13/oberon023.jpg
Yay!!
She seriously deserves it. Great fucking album.
stevie..delish pic!!!!
I think I’ve seen that picture before – I love it! Glamour!!
Mitchell – also Eartha Kitt, of course, singing Monotonous, and who was the huge breakout star of New Faces among many. Didja know Maya Angelou auditioned to take over Eartha’s part when Eartha went to Paris to perform in zee night cluuube? Maya was offered the part but turned it down to be in the European touring company of Porgy & Bess.
Sheila – I never saw that movie! I’ll Netflix it right away! xxx S
great album and she somehow does a retro thing without seeming derivative or ersatz..quite a feat!!
Yeah – I honestly did not know she was a contemporary artist when I first heard the song on the radio at the tattoo parlor – it’s that authentic. Amazing.
Eartha ,of course..which brings us back to Amy Winehouse..since Sheila thinks she evokes Eartha’s bizarre earthiness and twisted soulful vocals.
I could totally hear Amy Winehouse growling out Beale St Blues like Eartha.
I wonder what she’s like live – have you seen her, Mitchell? Is she any good? It FEELS to me like it’s organic to her, to sing like that … but you never know. So much can be done in production of albums now … to pump up something that might be weak or lacking. But she really seems to “have it” – I’m curious about her live, though.
she is GREAT when she is sober..and it is frightening when she is loaded…youtube her!
http://youtube.com/watch?v=IlRF43-xaYc
Wow
big upset at the grammy’s…Herbie Hancock just won Album of the Year..for his Joni Mitchell tribute cd…wow..he beat amy and kanye and the foo fighters and vince gill…yeah jazz! yeah Joni!!
wow! Jean’s going to be so happy about that (even though she loves the Foo more than it is possible to even understand – a love I share).
its a great cd..tina turner songs a heartbreaking obscure Joni song called Edith and the Kingpin..ill play it for u when u come..its remarkable…and YES Amy on Letterman…she rocked it like that tonight at the Grammy’s
Mitchell – Roy Scheider died. Had you heard? :( I’m so sad.
i must admit..i dont get the foo-fighters…no thats not true..i get it..catchy songs, rocking tight band..but i dont feel it ya know? i was born in the wrong era
I was born in the wrong era, too! They just speak to me. When I want to feel better about something, sometimes I pop them in. The joy is IN the music. The chord changes … I’m a huge fan!
Mitchell – sorry, going back and forth here … I just heard Roy Scheider died, and I’m sad -
Here’s a piece about him:
http://www.cinematical.com/2008/02/10/the-great-roy-scheider-passes-away-at-75/
He was just on my mind recently when I did that little post on All That Jazz. When Scheider was good, he was very VERY good.
i have plans to watch that with dominic this week..i just heard about it! his performance as Joe Gideon is one of my all time faves..and truly underappreciated
I have GOT to start getting out of bed before Noon.
hahahaha I wondered where the hell you were!
