I wrote a piece for Epicurious about four food scenes in When Harry Met Sally for Valentine’s Day. The essay is part of what will be an ongoing “food and film” series, and I’ll keep you posted when more go live.

I am Sally. My best guy friend in college (who said he cried through WHMS the first time because he thought it was so much like us) used to make me order last because it took so long and “damn it, just pick the tomatoes OFF god.”
hahahahaha
I thought you were going to talk about Paprikash! I remember hearing the pecan pie scene was improvised and Meg Ryan said you can see her glance at Rob Reiner but then keep going with it. I always end up putting Nora Ephron’s books on my cookbook shelf because there are always so many good recipes!
By the way, so cool you’re writing for Epicurious! We’re film and food lovers and look forward to reading more!
Yes, Kate – I love that you can SEE Meg Ryan look off-camera at Rob Reiner, like, “What am I supposed to be doing here??” and that Reiner kept it in. Perfect!!
Yeah, this Epicurious thing should be a fun gig. More to come!!
My favorite “food” bit in that movie comes during a moment when we don’t get to hear the dialog…I think a song is playing, or something, during a montage…Harry and Sally are at some restaurant, and Sally is animatedly going through her ordering schtick, during which the poor waiter looks over at Harry, who helplessly shrugs. He’s long since accepted this part of Sally’s personality, and is now bemused by it.
(By the way, ever watch the Deleted Scenes on the DVD? This movie is Ground Zero for “Why deleted scenes got deleted”. They’re AWFUL.)
