brava Ms. Richardson and brava Ms. O’Malley…gorgeous, one and all.
Amen, Mitchell.
Those clips, my God. I’d never seen them. I feel like they will actually cause me to lose sleep tonight.
I’m going to go read your piece right now. But I just first wanted to say that I am kind of devastated by her passing. She was one of my first favourite actresses. I literally still have a scrapbook from when I was 12/13 filled with photo’s of her. I just loved her. And I have obviously only seen her movies. I know that her best work was probably in theatre. I can’t explain why some people just “speak” to me. I am so sad. Thank you that you have written about her.
Nicola – I totally understand about how some people just get under your skin. It’s really an awful loss – the whole thing has kind of freaked me out.
Her Sally Bowles was a highwater mark for me, in terms of live theatre.
Tracey – doesn’t she look absolutely amazing? The clips can capture what was going on in her face (chilling – she is truly MAD) – but it’s really the body I remember, violently trembling – that one arm flapping out to the side, out of her control – Unbelievable performance.
I’m just speechless other than to say thanks, Sheila. This is exactly the kind of tribute I’ve been looking for. Wonderful job.
Beautiful piece Sheila. God, I am so sad.
Emily, Jackie – thank you, ladies.
It’s such a shock, and I am so sad for her family.
She was an amazing talent.
God, those clips gave me chills. I found it hard to look at her, especially her eyes – they looked so stricken, so bleak. I’d have given anything to seen that live. Beautiful piece, and a lovely tribute to her.
Holy mackerel. That is an amazing piece of footage. Such a loss. Wish I’d witnessed it first hand but glad to have been taken through it via such a heartfelt insightful piece of writing.
I’m so glad for your post, Sheila. Like many others, I’m sure, when I first heard about her playing Sally Bowles and winning a Tony, I was really stumped – what was her performance like? Natasha Richardson? Your brilliant review/insight helps me to understand. What a great loss. xxx
I found myself feeling claustrophobic as I read your essay about her performance in Cabaret, and even more so when I watched the clips. Your words so captured the artistry of her interpretation, its rawness, and the loss. My thanks.
