I meant to thank you for the recommendation. I’ve passed this film up a couple of times when it came on TCM, as my kids tend to use up the DVR mercilessly and it’s hard for the old man to get a film in edgewise. But next time it shows up I’ll grab it with both hands and watch it in spite of them.
The first time I watched this film, the setting on my dvd player were turned to ‘black & white’ and I didn’t realise it was supposed to be in colour until after I’d seen the film and went online to read reviews, seeing screengrabs that were all in colour! I was like “Wait…what?!?”.

You’re in for quite a ride, Joel!
And Joan Blondell is wonderful – really good performance from her.

That shot in the dressing room, with the mirrors all reflecting her face and eyes? (Or EYE, in one case.) WOW.
