I have been remiss in not pointing to the following post sooner. It is called "Braiding Traditions" by Jayne, the Barefoot Kitchen Witch.
It's not just a run-of-the-mill post. It is an essay.
It starts with Jayne, lying in bed before her husband and child wake up, and she tells us that "cookies are dancing in her head." (Jayne is not a lunatic, by the way!) She begins her post remembering the traditional German cookies baked by her mother-in-law who passed away recently - Jayne wants to make some of them this year for the holiday. (Jayne is a helluva cook).
But her morning ruminations about German cookies becomes a memorial piece about her mother-in-law, which then becomes a piece about traditions, and the importance of upholding traditions. Traditions, as symbolized by the cookies.
Jayne states:
And so now I am the keeper of the cookie tradition.
Jayne is a beautiful writer, by the way, and this is a piece you do not want to miss.
On a day like today, with the terrible news from Turkey, reading it might brighten and deepen your morning.
Also, Jayne: You promised to post the recipe for "springerl" - don't forget!
Posted by sheila | TrackBackI haven't forgotten!! It's just been a very
crazy week. Look for recipes this weekend. Or tonight - after Alex goes to bed... Thanks for the link!
Sheila, thanx for the link. It was a beautifully written piece.
