Name that country

Carlos has issued a challenge on his blog. He has posted 3 photos from an unidentified country, and asks us to guess the location.

My guess, Cambodia, was blazingly wrong. It didn't FEEL right to me, either ... I have never been to Cambodia but my idea of it is that the foliage is a bit more messy, more jungly.

Anyway, go check out the photos - see if you can guess. He will continue to post photos, until someone guesses correctly.

Canal zone. very good call., I didn't even think of that.

I'd love to pass through the Canal one day, all the more so right now since I'm reading about it in Theodore Rex.

Hmmmm, there's an interesting connection between Louisiana and the Canal Zone. The US District Court for the District of the Canal Zone used to fall under the jurisdiction of the Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit, headquartered in New Orleans...which is why there's a judge's bench from the Canal Zone in the trial moot courtoom at my alma mater, Tulane Law School.

Dave J -

How bizarre and interesting ... I didn't know that!

And Bill -

Paul Theroux traveled by train from Cape Cod to the very bottom of South America and wrote a very interesting (and very funny at times) book about it. The Canal Zone chapter was very bizarre - I'm sure the place is very different now - since we handed the zone back over to them, can't even remember when - but the way he described it was a kind of Stepford Wives or Truman Show existence - everything regulated, everything planned out ...

I'm not sure what it's like there now.

I gotta pick up that Teddy Roosevelt book ...

Minor nitpicking correction: we didn't hand the Canal Zone "back" to Panama, but "over" to them. The Canal Zone came into existence simultaneously with U.S. recognition of Panamanian independence from Colombia.

Thanks for the link Red...

Will from Morituri Te Salutant got the answer yesterday (he's been here quite a bit, apparently) - it's Belize (Central America). When I get back to the land of bountiful bandwidth (next week) I'll post more photos (I have hundreds just from this trip), as well as more info about Belize.

I think your comments may have been with me on American Airlines today - absolutely incapable of reaching their destination.
