Coming Clean about A-rod

I haven't written so far on the A-Rod thing because - I didn't have the words - and I found the whole situation unbearable and hateful. I have NO SENSE OF HUMOR. Got that??

ba-dum-ching

Anyway, thanks to Steve Silver, I read the following column by Sports Guy - an insane Red Sox fan - and all I can say is: I concur. Yes.

Bring it on. Bring it on, mo-fos ... Bring it on.

This season is gonna be damn exciting - from day one. It will be a baseball season filled with hatred, scorn, wild bursts of competitive laughter, schaudenfraude, contempt, and very little joy.

In other words - a lot of fun.

Bring it on this, bring it on that.

I'm still hoping for horrific, Moises Alou's ankle-type injuries to both of them on Opening Day.

Well, Bill, my resistance to wishing injuries to people goes along with my whole "bad karma" thing I have described to you.

And so I am reduced to saying, "Bring it on."

This is the year! (He said, just as in every previous year).

I definitely need to get my TV hooked up by the time of opening day.

Posted by: red at February 18, 2004 5:37 PM

It's a blowing off steam thing, I don't actually hope any athlete gets hurt. Not even Roger Clemens.

Posted by: Bill McCabe at February 18, 2004 6:00 PM

Come on, Bill.

You are heartless. You are cynical.

:)

Roger Clemens could push me towards bad karma thoughts ... definitely.

Posted by: red at February 18, 2004 6:02 PM

I thought I was a gushy, loving guy?

OK...maybe just Roger Clemens, because of the whole "tried to kill Mike Piazza" thing.

Over here, on the National League side of things, I'm having a GREAT day. As a life-long Cubs fan, to know that Greg Maddux is back? I *literally* almost began crying during the press conference. Last night, I will admit to trolling the espn.com and cubs.com fan boards (like Jim Hendry and Dusty Baker might go on there and reveal something). Last time I was this giddy was when Michael Jordan un-retired (the first time).

I don't care that he's 37. I don't care that his best years are behind him. I don't care that we "overpaid". A wrong has been righted. On the way home tonight, right after the press conference, I called my boyfriend and told him that my stomach felt the "Christmas feeling" inside.

I am COUNTING on the Red Sox to make to the World Series. I say, prove that $190M (is that the payroll #?) cannot buy a World Series. Also, really, do the Red Sox want a guy who WHINED his way out of Texas? No.

And here on the North side, we'll do all we can to humiliate Clemens. Especially when he has to bat.

46 days until opening day. DON'T EVEN TRY, A-ROD. DON'T EVEN TRY.

Ann -

I can see now that I will never be able to live down the "Don't even try, Chips" mantra. But I am very glad to see that it is applicable in many different situations, and so has a tinge of universality to it.

Ann-

You shouldn't even be posting until your team has set foot on a World Series Field. Last time y'all won the popular song was "Over There" - Irving Berlin. Yankee fans help their team; I believe it was '00 when a Yankee fan turned a fly out into a home run. Cubs fans - well....we all have heard about Bartman Ball. Your blowing smoke now but talk to me in October. And Red-
this is going to be a season to remember.

P.S. Red Sox Suck.

Richard Cook -

Don't use that tone. I can't stand that tone. Ann Marie can say whatever the hell she feels like saying.

Posted by: red at February 19, 2004 10:35 AM

Oh, and also - if the Red Sox suck then why did they get to the World Series last year and give the Yankees a run for their money?

This is why I didn't want to post on A-rod, because there are people who think there is only ONE TEAM in baseball.

Bah humbug.

Posted by: red at February 19, 2004 10:40 AM

It's not the Yankees I have a problem with: they've fielded great teams and Torre is a class act. It's a certain type of Yankees fan:

"Yankee fans help their team."

Hahahahahaha. I hope you didn't type that with a strait face.

Posted by: Dan at February 19, 2004 10:48 AM

Red - I am being facetious sorry. If hyperbole is not allowed please say so.

"This is why I didn't want to post on A-rod, because there are people who think there is only ONE TEAM in baseball."

That is what a fan is. He or she follows their team to the exclusion of others. I'm not going to apologize for that.

Yeah I'm a passionate Yankee fan and, yeah I believe there is only ONE team in baseball.

Ann can post anything she wants. I was merely pointing out the utility of being loud for a team that has not made it to the Series since '45.

Richard -

Sorry, dude, please don't tell me what a "fan" is. That's the kind of tone I am talking about.

I'm a huge Red Sox fan. I have friends who are huge Yankee fans, Mets fans, Cubs fans.

The thing in common is love of the game.

This'll be the year the Yanks go all the way, again, and it's about damn time.

Screw all those lesser teams. ;)

Posted by: Mr. Lion at February 20, 2004 1:24 AM

I think a Yankee implosion is pretty likely this year. Two potential HOF shortstops on the same team will not make for a happy clubhouse, no matter what they say now. And the pitching staff is thin. After spending a bathtub full of money, George isn't going to have much patience with losses...

Posted by: MikeR at February 20, 2004 1:54 AM

Mr. Lion -

I could take those words "it's about damn time" and apply it to my own tragic Red Sox fan status ...

But time will tell!

I'm looking forward to the battle. :)
