For the Baltimore Boy...

who emailed me that he hadn't commented recently because of the "lack of boobie references" on my blog, which made me laugh. Like there was ever a time when I wrote about "boobies" with regularity. However, there was one Sharon Stone picture I posted which, I think, generated some breast-related convo.

Anyway, this is for you, Baltimore Boy, and for anyone else who wants to leap in:

Who has the best breasts in Hollywood, and why?

I will say that we can go with "past or present" - because I would go with Rita Hayworth, or Marilyn Monroe - but those breasts are of another time. Tastes change.

Take it away, everyone.

Ida Lupino.

There can be no rational disgreement.

Oh, you wanted to know why. Purely the eye of the beholder.

In terms of overall look, though? Ingrid Bergman.

Posted by: er, mitch again at May 10, 2004 6:31 PM

Yes. Eye of beholder, definitely. Maybe "why" is a dumb question. Carry on. :)

Posted by: red at May 10, 2004 6:32 PM

I can't recall more than a [pun deleted] few boobie references since I've been reading.

Does Monica Belluci count as Hollywood? If not, perhaps Halle Berry will do.

Posted by: Bill McCabe at May 10, 2004 6:37 PM

Oh yeah, as to "why". I don't feel eloquent enough to put it into words, the reaction is pretty much instinctive and defies attempts to define it.

I saw Janet Jackson posted here first, Sheila.

Who has the best breasts in Hollywood? I don't know if I'm the best judge, as I don't watch too many movies, but I'd say Jennifer Garner. Why? Because proportionally they work with the rest of her body. Not too large to make her look like a junior grade Goodyear blimp, and not so small that she could pass as a boy if she wanted (Calista, are you listening?).

As to why, well I answered it on a personal scale above (works with the rest of the body -- makes the whole package more attractive). As to the general "Why?"; i.e. "Why are men so drawn to breasts?" I'd say it's fundamentally attention grabbing. What is going to draw our attention to someone from a distance? Can't see their face yet, if there's a crowd we can't see her whole figure. But the bosom, now that works! It's also at the right height for distance viewing. Up close we have to be crude and look down at it, but at a distance it falls right at eye level.

By the way, this is why I love to be seated at a party when someone introduces me to an attractive lady. I have to look up at her anyway, so I have a great chance to ogle!

If dead people count, my vote's on Chris Farley.

Posted by: Emily at May 10, 2004 7:34 PM

Let me preface this by saying that working in a call center REALLY sucks, especially when you have something to say about boobies, and are trying to dodge the quality monitors' screengrabs from catching you in the act.

After ogling through the google image search, I feel that I'll respect Mitch's opinion on Ida Lupino from afar. I can't say that I've seen enough of her work to give a decent opinion, but I will mention that there may be some sort of Maternal influence associated with that pick. Maybe she reminds him of an aunt that he liked to have pick him up when he was a wee one.

Pure Speculation. I might be off the mark.

To choose the best breasts in Hollywood...well, I can't choose one. Sorry. I'm a Libra. Trying to choose one thing that doesn't involve life or death is impossible for me. Except at Fast food joints. I decide before I get there so as to not confuse the 17 year old across the counter, but I digress...

I'll try to narrow this down by category; Buxom, Natural, Augmented, and 'Small on purpose'

Small on Purpose: Gwyneth Paltrow. In fact, seeing her in 'A Perfect Murder' told me that I won't buy any nightclothes for my lady. She'll just walk around in my shirts.

Natural: Hmm...It's a Toss up (pardon the pun) between Halle Berry, and Jamie Lee Curtis. Jamie Lee was always a favorite of mine, especially in the days of flicks like 'Perfect', 'Trading Places' and whatever that one was with C. Thomas Howell, where they did it in a moving car. Halle scores high also because of the fact that she TEASED us for so long before finally baring herself to the world. Personally, I think more performers should consider that. It's a shame that people are percieved as being 'cheapened' if they do a nude. I can understand why she waited to do it, I just resent being held in suspense on occasion.

Augmented: Well...let's not go through the FULL list, because after all, when it comes to falsies, they're manufactured, & they're built off of a sort of standard. No real Mystery involved in it.

Pam Anderson
Demi Moore (although I liked her before she got them, too!)

Buxom:

There is one name that seems to consistently outrank all of the ladies in Hollywood when it comes to this section of the subject. I've been objective. I've been careful in consideration.

I cannot deny the amazing bosoms of Lisa Nicole Carson. I simply can't. Just seeing her name written or in text makes me either salivate, or at least pull a silly grin on my face, trying to change my subconscious from that look that she tends to give the camera that almost says 'I dare you to not look at them'.

Queen Latifah is a close second. She also has impressive bosoms, however she looks more of the type to 'buss me inna mouf' to refer to a dialect.

That doesn't finish the list. In fact, I had to cut out quite a bit to keep you fine folks reading my comment. I have only two people worth Honorable Mention:

Rachel True, because I think she's just...perfect in more ways than her bosom.

And last, but not least, Pam Grier. Truly a classic. Truly.

Best boobies today: It's still Diane Lane.

Best Past Boobies: Mae West. I can't say that they were objectively the best, but she sure knew how to present 'em!

Posted by: Jimmie at May 10, 2004 10:01 PM

Without thinking about it for very long...
Past: Rita Hayworth
Present: Sophie Marceau

Bill's right about it being difficult to put into words. I think there is a naturally artistic elegance to the curves of the female breast, but transferring one's visceral response into comprehensible prose on the subject is a daunting task.

Salma Hayak. No contest.

Posted by: willow at May 11, 2004 11:13 AM

The young Jennifer Connelly. Best ever. Hands down. Perfect. (for reference, see "The Rocketeer.")

Posted by: Wonderduck at May 11, 2004 12:41 PM

can there be any doubt?

Posted by: Mr. Bingley at May 11, 2004 12:45 PM

Sophia Loren.

Posted by: Alex Bensky at May 11, 2004 1:15 PM

I second the young Jennifer Connelly. She's gone anorexic lately but when she filmed the nude scenes for The Hot Spot her breasts were absolute perfection.

Posted by: Randal Robinson at May 11, 2004 1:19 PM

Mr Bingley:

Oh. My. God.

Posted by: red at May 11, 2004 1:36 PM

Kiera Knightley. She is over the age of 18, right?

I've seen "Pirates of the Caribbean" several times, and it ain't because of Jonny Depp's Oscar-nominated performance.

Posted by: knayte at May 11, 2004 1:46 PM

Catherine Bell from JAG (since willow already mentioned Salma). They may not be real, but they're spectacular.

Posted by: dorkafork at May 11, 2004 2:12 PM

Lindsay Lohan. Because they've still got the price tag on them.

Posted by: Jim Treacher at May 11, 2004 3:33 PM

I don't get to choose. One of my clearest memories is slamming headon into puberty at the exact instant Raquel Welch was bouncing across the screen in a bikini....... Must go lay down now......

Posted by: Jack at May 11, 2004 4:45 PM

Here here! JENNIFER CONNOLLEY pre annorexia. The Hot Spot, Rocketeer are good - but check out MULLHOLLAND DRIVE to see 'em in all their glory... There are also some tasty b&w stills of her in a g-string that get the blood pumping in all the right places....

I'm quite surprized that no one has mentioned
the all-natural Nikki Cox. (Real redhead, too,
even if the shade changed over time.)

Posted by: Ira at May 12, 2004 9:54 AM

I'm in the Jennifer Connelly fan club m'self. As far as the small set goes...Kiera Knightly is #1...what a babe. See Brit psychodrama The Hole if you want a closer look. And as far as augumented goes, what can I say, Tiffany Amber Theissan always rocked my world.

Posted by: Kin at May 12, 2004 11:36 AM

Given that a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush, my vote will have to go to whichever set is closest.

Excepting that, yes, Mr Bingley, I have a doubt.

Jaime Curtis! Remember her in Fish called Wanda? yum yum
