I have noticed that many of us preface many of our posts with: "I am a geek." Or "Geek alert coming at you..." or "I hate to be such a geek". I do this, too. Repetitively.
Well, I say: LET US STOP APOLOGIZING.
We are cool. We are geeks.
What "geek" seems to mean in this context is "I am incredibly passionate about something rather trivial, and I can tell you every teeny detail about that subject, and I'm kind of embarrassed at how much I know ... and yet ... here goes..."
I feel like a geek when someone asks me a random question about L.M. Montgomery (author of the Anne of Green Gables series) - and I can answer whatever question it is within 1 to 2 seconds. Literally.
I feel like a geek when discussing the Charlie Manson case, and I suddenly start talking about blood-type analysis as though I am an expert.
I feel like a geek when someone asks me a question about Marilyn Monroe. I actually don't even find group conversations about Marilyn Monroe fun at all, because I am HOLDING BACK the Geek-impulse. Everybody else is just saying, "Oh God, she was so beautiful" or "I loved Some like it hot..." and all I want to do is leap in and say, "Well, you know that when Marilyn was 2 ... " or "Josh Logan had a ton of things to say about that aspect of Marilyn..."
Geek-knowlege. One of the primary reasons to get yourself a blog.
So - "geek preface" out of the way, here is one of those posts. It is entitled "I am such a geek". The first phrase of the post is: "In lieu of having a life..."
Ah, the humanity.
But I wanted to point you over to the post, because it is QUITE interesting (all of his posts are, actually.)
Geeks usually are interesting, actually. I love it when people know random things, and are really passionate about these random things. And that's all I'm saying.
Posted by sheilaThank you, Sheila. Now I don't feel so bad about the Spock shirt I'm wearing right now.
Posted by: Emily at May 11, 2004 3:00 PMThat's an interesting mental picture, to say the least.
At least it's not a Red Shirt.
Posted by: Dan at May 11, 2004 3:08 PMNo it's not. I've no death wish, Dan.
Posted by: Emily at May 11, 2004 3:10 PMUh, thanks, Red (I think).
(I originally wrote "I guess now I should go out and get some of those glue-on pointy ears..." - but I wasn't sure anyone would get it.)
Posted by: CW at May 11, 2004 3:11 PMI'm complimenting you. From one geek to another. :)
Posted by: red at May 11, 2004 3:14 PMGeeks are HOT!
Posted by: Da Goddess at May 11, 2004 3:15 PMCW -- hobbit, elf, or Vulcan?
Posted by: Emily at May 11, 2004 3:18 PMDefinitely Vulcan. Do hobbits have pointy ears? I don't remember that. I do remember the elves looking like cute Vulcans.
Posted by: CW at May 11, 2004 3:22 PMRed before long we'll be comparing Geek Code(TM):)
Posted by: CW at May 11, 2004 3:24 PMTo name, or reference, drop, one of my friends is the dude who created (and has let lay un-updated for nearly a decade) the Geek Code.
Posted by: fad at May 11, 2004 4:26 PMGeeks rule.
I remember a geek comic strip I saw once, four redshirts drawing straws to see who has to beam down with Captain Kirk.
"Short straw, Marvin. Your turn to beam down."
I love how some of the redshirts always had some personal connection to Kirk. "Not Mallory! His father sponsored me at the Academy."
