... author of the great Black Hawk Down (and the not-so-great Killing Pablo) has written an essay on the torture of Iraqi prisoners. I consider it a must-read.

I have to admit, the Abu Ghraib scandal didn't make much of an impression on me, at least at first. There's a great deal of moral ambiguity to work through, here. Where to draw the line between the necessarily harsh treatment of dangerous detainees, and abuse of same? Between individual and institutional culpability? And so on.
Recent revelations make it much easier to work through these questions for this particular case (and I've revised my stance accordingly). But in principle, the ambiguities remain.
