LM Montgomery on the Bible

Lucy Maud Montgomery married a Presbyterian minister – who ended up going mad. He became convinced that he was going to hell, and he went insane with fear. Montgomery, although she was a minister’s wife, was quite unconventional in her own religious leanings – very open-minded – and a bit New Age-y – or, I guess at that time they called it “spiritualist”. She believed fully in ESP, and the dead trying to contact the living, etc. She also said that she NEVER felt religious in a church. She only felt religious when she was out in nature, walking in the woods, or on a beach. She hid all of these heretical thoughts from her wacko husband.

“I like reading the Bible — most of it. I like the folklore of Genesis and the drama of the Exodus and the gorgeous furnishings of the tabernacle and the doings of the kings and the good maledictions of the Psalms and the warm imagery of the Song of Solomon, and the cynicism of Ecclesiastes and the worldly wisdom of the Proverbs and the idyll of Ruth and the blazing fire of the Prophets and the wonders of Jesus’ teaching and the poetry of Revelations.”
