With the news being what it is these days, and the feeling of approaching terror attacks alive and well in the streets of Manhattan, (you can feel it when you go into the subways ... It's like a scent more than anything else) ... Anyway, with the news being what it is - I feel like, on my blog, I am a part of the string quartet playing happy little songs on the deck of the sinking Titanic.
However:
I am not putting my hands over my ears, shrieking "LALALALALA". That is not my gig. I am well-informed. I just don't feel like posting about it.
And so ... let the band play on.
Posted by sheilaSheila - sometimes I feel guilty as well, not writing about "the hard stuff" when there's so much rotten crap going on in the world. The thing is, I bet that little quartet made themselves and a whole lot of other folks that much more comfortable in their last hours.
Not that any of us are fixing to crash into icebergs or anything.
Posted by: Emily at May 26, 2004 12:26 PMEm-
I figure there are plenty of people out there who you go to to get "the news". I wouldn't be adding to anything. If I have something to say, I will ... but ... I admit it, I get burnt out. By talking about it. Ick.
Quote from Titanic (sorry!!) - said by the hot HOT Irish passenger (love him, want to see him act MORE, please):
He and the other 3rd class passengers are running on the deck, trying to find a lifeboat - and they run by the blithely playing quartet - and he grumbles: "Music to drown by. Now I know I'm in first class."
Posted by: red at May 26, 2004 12:30 PMI realize that I lose any moral authority whatsoever with a huge group of people when I quote "Titanic" seriously, to make some kind of point.
Posted by: red at May 26, 2004 12:30 PMThat guy WAS hot. Hotties trump moral authority. Always.
I don't think I have anything to add when it comes to the news anymore. At least not anything that people haven't already written ad nauseum. I'm just sticking to my books and movies these days. Besides, if we all are really going to eat shit and die, I'd like to meet death with a smile on my face and a lot of happy memories. I don't think wanting to make the best of life is shallow. In fact, it's pretty damn hard.
Posted by: Emily at May 26, 2004 12:40 PM"hotties trump moral authority."
Ain't it the truth. Thank goodness.
Posted by: red at May 26, 2004 12:43 PMI'm feeling some major burnout lately. It isn't that the news is especially bad or anything, I just don't think I have a lot to offer that others don't say better.
I'm worried about the new terror rumors, but I'm not going to let that news force me to huddle in my basement. If I have cause to go to the city, I'll go. I'm not going to hide.
Besides, it's Fleet Week.
Posted by: Bill McCabe at May 26, 2004 12:44 PMI think I've found a title for my next book: Hotties Trump Moral Authority: How To Be A Guilt-Free Slut.
Hey, it made Pamela Des Barres famous.
Posted by: Emily at May 26, 2004 12:56 PMKate Winslet trumps moral authority.
Posted by: Stephen Silver at May 26, 2004 1:05 PMAh yes, Emily - one of your favorite books, right? I love it too.
Posted by: red at May 26, 2004 1:06 PMThis is most definitely an enjoyable game - to be played on the deck of the sinking Titanic.
Which hot celebs trump moral authority?
Posted by: red at May 26, 2004 1:09 PMI saw an interview with Pamela once, where she said "Hey, I went after what I wanted and I got it. Gloria Steinem can kiss my ass." She has been my personal hero ever since.
Hot celebs: I so want to @#$% the guy who played Haldir in FOTR and TTT. Even if the rumors about his being gay are true. I'll convert that shit.
My friend Heather and I used to have this list in college that we kept hanging on the wall of her apartment. "Guys We'd Like To F*ck". It was an ongoing endeavor, with names like "the guy from the cat food commercial that came on during 'Cheers'." There must have been 200 names on the list by the time we retired the game.
Posted by: Emily at May 26, 2004 1:16 PMTo my taste, Boromir trumps moral authority.
Gloria Steinem can kiss my ass. I've always felt that way about that woman.
Posted by: red at May 26, 2004 1:20 PMEowyn trumps moral authority, Arwen does not.
Posted by: Bill McCabe at May 26, 2004 1:25 PMNow now Bill, I have just made up rules to this game. One cannot judge another's trump-card. Especially if the Titanic is in the process of sinking. If some poor sap says, "Arwen trumps moral authority" are you going to deny him that pleasure??
I say no.
Besides, in some moods - for me - Jack Black trumps moral authority.
So does Gene Hackman.
Posted by: red at May 26, 2004 1:34 PMWell, if those are the rules, to each his own.
Kate Beckinsale trumps moral authority, anytime, anywhere.
Posted by: Bill McCabe at May 26, 2004 1:41 PMJohn Malkovich in Dangerous Liasons trumps moral authority, but only in that particular instance. He's not conventionally attractive, but somethint about him in that moive was just dead sexy.
Posted by: Emily at May 26, 2004 1:42 PM"Kate Beckinsale trumps moral authority, anytime, anywhere."
Forget about moral authority: she even trumps the abysmally awful movies she's been in, which is considerably harder.
Nicole Kidman trumps moral authority. And practically anything else.
Posted by: Dave J at May 26, 2004 1:48 PMEwan McGregor trumps moral authority. He trumps whatever he wants to, with me.
Posted by: red at May 26, 2004 1:52 PMI'm just glad no one has said Trump trumps moral authority.
Posted by: fad at May 26, 2004 2:00 PMFad: If they had, you could have said, "You're fired."
Posted by: red at May 26, 2004 2:09 PMThe girl in Geiger's book store trumps moral (or ANY) authority (even the undeniable authority of rain).
;)
Good answer!!
Posted by: red at May 26, 2004 2:14 PMAdditional thoughts: Angelina Jolie trumps moral authority, and apparently the capacity for rational thought, both by others and herself.
Kirsten Dunst definitely trumps moral authority.
Cate Blanchett trumps moral authority...and would be underrated no matter how much praise was heaped on her.
Finally, I'll add that Renee Zelwegger trumps moral authority, not because I think so (I don't) but just because I know it'll annoy you. :-p
Posted by: Dave J at May 26, 2004 3:16 PMAngelina Jolie trumps moral authority, and apparently the capacity for rational thought, both by others and herself.
HAHAHAHAHAHAHA
DaveJ:
Again, this is the sinking Titanic. If you want to waste your last moments with that shriveled-up apple-doll just to annoy me, that's your choice!!
Posted by: red at May 26, 2004 3:31 PMNo, definitely not; if forced to pick just one, I think I'll be with Nicole in our last minutes of life, thanks.
Additional musings: Sharon Stone trumps moral authority, as I know you agree. So does Charlize Theron, in quite a lot of the same ways.
Posted by: Dave J at May 26, 2004 3:43 PMPrincess Michael trumps moral authority.
Posted by: red at May 26, 2004 3:49 PMOMG, she so does not trump any kind of authority. If only the management of that restauranmt had had the balls to trump her royal ass with the sidewalk.
Posted by: Dave J at May 26, 2004 3:54 PMHa! Just said that to drive you nuts.
I never liked her. (Like any of the royals care what a little Irish girl thinks of them!!!) But she always seemed like a huge phony.
Posted by: red at May 26, 2004 3:56 PMPrincess Michael and Renee Zellweger can have each other. (Ewww...that's not an image I care to ponder too much.)
Posted by: Dave J at May 26, 2004 3:59 PMIf you want hideous imagery, Grace Jones trumps moral authority.
Anyone remember A View to a Kill? Worst Bond girl ever.
Posted by: Bill McCabe at May 26, 2004 4:34 PMThanks, Bill: Bond girls are supposed to be attractive, dammit! That, their names, while still generally absurd, just don't contain nearly the level of innuendo they used to. Oh for the days of Honor Blackman as Pussy Galore. ;-)
Posted by: Dave J at May 26, 2004 4:38 PM"Dr. Goodhead" is my personal favorite. "Plenty" isn't too far behind.
Posted by: Bill McCabe at May 26, 2004 4:43 PMbilly crudup, edward norton, and paul rudd can trump my authority any day.
Posted by: Allison at May 26, 2004 6:01 PM"moral authority" that is
Posted by: Allison at May 26, 2004 6:04 PMWhatever kind of trump it may be ... it's gone with those 3 gentlemen.
Understood.
I understand your "type" now completely, as well. :)
Posted by: red at May 26, 2004 6:07 PMAnd I thought we were entering the dominatrix strain of this thread. Seriously, I'd make Paul Rudd my bitch any day.
Posted by: Emily at May 26, 2004 6:14 PMWill you hate me if I say I hung out with him (very unsatisfactorily) one night?
Posted by: red at May 26, 2004 6:16 PMYou probably will. I can't help it. Look at me - gossiping about a celeb ON MY BLOG. Inappropriate.
Posted by: red at May 26, 2004 6:17 PMYeah, careful, Sheila...you wouldn't want to turn into Wonkette or anything. ;-)
Posted by: Dave J at May 26, 2004 6:25 PMIf I didn't know how discreet you were, I'd ask for the deets here. But no, I wouldn't hate you. I'd just claw your face off and call you names.
Posted by: Emily at May 26, 2004 6:25 PMJesus, Dave. You're mean.
No, it wasn't anything Wonkette-ish. He's a good friend of a friend of mine.
Posted by: red at May 26, 2004 6:28 PMHope you didn't take that too seriously, Sheila. I'm sure you'd never turn into Wonkette. ;-)
Posted by: Dave J at May 26, 2004 7:35 PMI winced in pain when I read the comparison. Ouch!!
Posted by: red at May 26, 2004 7:39 PMBut no, I didn't take it too seriously. If I throw Princess Michael in your face, then you have a right to throw Wonkette (or Renee Zellweger) in mine. :)
Posted by: red at May 26, 2004 7:40 PMThere are an alarming number of women who trump moral authority for me. In terms of actresses, I would definitely have to include Julie Christie, Diane Lane, Liv Tyler, Kate Beckinsale, Thora Birch and Scarlett Johansson.
Posted by: MikeR at May 27, 2004 12:12 PMJulie Christie ... Yum!
And I love Thora Birch. What an excellent choice.
