I was very much looking forward to seeing The Village...

.... Reviews like this have dashed my hopes somewhat.

Critics were enjoined after the screening to avoid revealing the plot secrets. That is not because we would spoil the movie for you. It's because if you knew them, you wouldn't want to go.

Ouch. Bummer.

And this classic Ebert-ian sentence:

The movie is so somber, it's afraid to raise its voice in its own presence.

Damn. No wonder why Ebert makes the big bucks.

I don't base going to see movies on NRO's reviews, but they liked it. Probably worth the read, if for no other reason to confirm if you want to go see it. The Wall Street Journal, however, ripped it big time.

I usually - but not always - end up agreeing with Ebert.

But when in doubt, I've found that Chris Hewitt - of the St. Paul Pioneer Press - has similar tastes in movies to mine. If he hates something, I usually end up hating it too.

And he loved it...

I'm a horror film freak, so I'll definately see it. The question is, will I see it in the theatre. I don't know. It's got to have some major carnage in it for me to see it on the big screen. I'm talking heads ripped off, eating of body parts, or at least some kind of big, drooling monster. Spooky stuff? I'd rather buy new shoes.

"some kind of big drooling monster". Oh yeah, you gotta have one of those.

Big drooling monsters make think...

"...and just as it seemed that all was lost, the animator suffered a fatal heart attack. [cue Terry Gilliam sitting up from his drafting easel with a start and keeling over] The cartoon peril was no more."

A friend of mine who saw it last night said that it was so bad that people were walking out.

As long as wer'e talking about upcoming films we wanna see, I myself am eagerly anticipating "Hero" starring Jet Li. Smartasses might pan it as "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon Part II", but I thought the scenes shown in the previews/commercials were awesome!

It better not suck!......
