Sheila is very happy – and also a tiny bit unhappy

Happy because:

— I went out last night and hung out with 5 blurpy Irishmen. There were others at the table, but I was primarily interested in the blurps. They are the kind of men who, no matter what is going in their lives, if you say to them “Hey, how are you?” they will reply jauntily, “Oh, can’t complain, can’t complain.” I could say, “Wow, it looks like someone just chopped off your foot with an axe … does it hurt?” Back would come the jaunty reply, “Oh, can’t complain, can’t complain.” I am strangely charmed by that attitude.

— I had a phone conversation with Cashel yesterday. He is going to be 7 soon. He reads “4 chapters a day” of Harry Potter. He is now on the 5th book in the series. He told me that he is planning a surprise and wanted me to keep a secret. I was extremely excited. Then he said he had to go, and hung up promptly. Without divulging the secret. I love it because his personality is so HUGE, and his voice, on the phone, sounds soooooo teeeny. So cute!

— Emily, you will be happy to know that I braved Hollywood Video. Just to see the scene. To evaluate the prospects. And lo and behold – they have completely built out their “classics” section, and they are all videos, not DVDs, and there are so many movies I haven’t seen and want to see that I almost had a heart attack looking at all of the titles. I am so happy!!! I signed up promptly. The first video I rented (which I realize made me look like a JACKASS probably) was the Howard Hawks/Cary Grant film I Was a Male War Bride, which I haven’t yet seen. CAN’T WAIT.

Unhappy because:

— I have lost electricity in ONE of my rooms. My main room, with my computer, my clock, my stereo, and my TV. My kitchen and bathroom are fine. So … even if I wanted to watch I Was a Male War Bride I couldn’t. I may have to drag my TV and VCR into my miniscule kitchen this evening. I thought the loss of power might have something to do with the tail-end of Ivan which whipped through here yesterday. It was like we were in a tropical country. SHEETS of rain, huge thunder, wind driving the rain past my window in horizontal lines … I called the landlord, so hopefully we’ll be back up and filled with electrical power this evening.

Does your apartment have a fuse box or a circuit breaker?

I’ll be money that’s all you need to do…

I’m sure I do. My super is useless, however … I wish I knew where it was, and also what the hell to do. It seems pretty simple – there are a couple of outlets that no longer work. That’s all. Also, weirdly, the outlet my fridge is plugged into is also out, so everything is going bad in my fridge. grrrrr

By the way, Mitch – I know my dates for my trip this fall … but I couldn’t find your email anywhere. I’ll be in Chicago from Oct. 9 to Oct. 16.

I’m gonna make an announcement about it here, and then pick a night where I basically sit in a bar in Chicago, hold court, and see who shows up. :)

It’s not in your apartment somewhere? I don’t know what the buildings are like up there, but every apartment I’ve ever had has the switches in the unit somewhere. Always a weird place though, like behind all the coats in your closet or something.

    Nathan –

Hmmm, now I feel like an idiot. If it is in my apartment somewhere, I have no idea about it, and I haven lived there for a year now.

I’m pretty sure it’s in the basement somewhere – it’s an old building, with 10 apartments in it.

My super, like I said, is useless. Just wants a free ride. When we had that huge snowstorm this past winter, I finally shoveled the walk, because it was impossible to get into our apartment, and he wouldn’t pick up a dern shovel.

I probably would have sent him an invoice for that just to make a point.

As for the switches, I’ve forgotten where they are for long periods of time. I think they might be capable of moving on their own. They prefer dark, dry, enclosed environments. Usually a small closet or next to a water heater. If the building is old, they may be social creatures and prefer to stick together in the basement.

I’m glad to know you found a new video store! It’s been keeping me up nights. Really ;)!

If they’ve got any of those cheap videos for sale out there, check out the “First Rites” series (in the ugly yellow boxes. It’s independent films from first-time filmmakers. Some are good, some are so bad they’re good and the worst of them are so bad they’ll make you consider suicide.

    10/9 – 10/16, huh?

    I believe I’ll be there!

  8. red says:

I’m in a wedding early in the week – so I was thinking of setting aside that Wed. or Thurs. to have some kind of big brou-haha at some random pub. I’ll keep everyone posted.

  9. mitch says:

    Sounds good!

Not that it needs to affect *your* planning – but the later in the week, the better it is for, er, me, in particular…
