The eyes and the faces all turned themselves toward me, and guiding myself by them, as by a magical thread, I stepped into the room.

Clue:

This novel was published posthumously. The author's mother, when the book came out, said that the book represented "the blackest ingratitude."

This author, at times, has been more famous for her personal life than for her writing - which is a shame.

Are my clues too easy?

Thinking up clues is hard work. I need a drink.

Not too easy in general by any interpretation, Sheila.

The 'more famous for her personal life' is hard to miss though.

I'll have to leave the game at this point.. it's getting late here and if I don't get my regulation 6 hours I'll be even less fun to be around than usual tomorrow.
