Clue:

This one is hard, I know. It's a short story written by a hugely famous author (he was famous while he was alive, one of the first authors to really USE "celebrity" in a modern sense - in an Andy Warhol sense). He wrote a couple of books which will be read 100s of years from now (in my opinion).

This short story is his most famous one - you probably read it in an English class. It's required reading (at least it was when I was in high school)

Sounds like you are talking about Capote?

Or I could be way off.

Yes. Capote wrote this story. It is in "the curriculum". I remember reading it in 7th grade, I think. It's WACKO. Very funny, but ultimately (obviously) very upsetting.
