For a second I was going to write Patrick McGrath, but then thought that wasn't right. I saw the movie, did not read the book.

I think it's McCabe ... but not sure suddenly.

I think you're right. Patrick McGrath writes very dark books, too, but in a different style. He wrote Asylum and, er, other things that I can't remember now. (Something about a burn victim in love?) He's married to a well-known British stage actress, Maria Aitken.
