Posted by sheilaRed, I just consulted outside sources - *cough* Google *cough* - to figure out the answer (it was buggin' me, what can I say). And you're right, that was a great clue. While I didn't actually smack my forehead, I should have, and I thought about it.
I should have known from one repeated bit of punctuation, frankly; I got into the habit of it after I read him doing it, back when I was an impressionable undergraduate.
