Guess this quote!

It comes from a movie I watched again last night. The following line is said probably 20 times throughout the film.

"This means something."

Over and over ... with emphasis on different words sometimes.

"This MEANS something."

or:

"This means SOMEthing."

or sometimes like this:

"This. Means. Something."

Once the movie is guessed, I'll tell you a cool story.

I'm going to take a wild guess here and say Close Encounters.

And now you're going to tell us a UFO story??

YAY!!! Yup - Close Encounters. Said entirely by Richard Dreyfus, as he stares at shaving cream, mashed potatoes, etc.

Oh and no, I wish I had a UFO tale to tell. I really do.

I was gonna tell a cool story about Steven Spielberg (in re: to Close Encounters) from when he came and did a talk at my school.

Story soon to follow!

Didn't Julius say something similar to Vincent Vega when looking at the bullet holes behind them?

Bill - maybe, I don't remember! Emily might remember. :)

But this quote in Close Encounters is said, no lie, probably 20 times. It's a theme, a mantra.

As a side-note, Sheila, does Close Encounters - Special Edition qualify as a director's re-release that was justified?

It's been a while since I saw the original version but I remember thinking "Hmm.. why?" when I first saw the Special Edition.

I think it was justified. He didn't go back in and AIR-BRUSH THE GUNS OUT OF COPS HOLSTERS like he did with ET. He spruced up the special effects. I don't know - when I first saw it in the movie theatre, it was spectacular enough. That movie blew my MIND. I watched the special edition last night. It feels like the same movie to me.

Heh heh.. yeah.. Airbrushing your OWN movie?? Bizarre.

He did spruce up the special effects, and that's generally a plus, but I think (and as I said it's been a while*) the original did a slightly better job of building up to Dreyfuss' character finally figuring out what the message was - Go to Devil's Mountain!!

[* - although it may just be that the extra effects over-emphasise the end of the movie in my memory]

I have no idea. I haven't seen the original in years. Like I said - it felt like the same movie to me.

I remember the special edition being re-released and it showed the inside of the alien ship. Anything that gave me MORE of a favorite movie when I was a kid was welcome stuff.

My favorite UFO story was told by Isaac Asimov. He said he saw this disk hovering high in the distance. It was slowly moving toward him. "Oh no," he said. "You can't be. I don't believe in you." The disk began to elongate and eventually a word appeard: Goodyear. "Whew," said Dr. Asimov.

Amazing movie -- it absolutely captivated this 12 year old when it was released. Saw it several days in a row -- much better than Star Wars, to my mind.
