Go against the grain

Mitch has two really funny pieces up right now:

Things I Hate But I'm Supposed To Like

Mitch: I am WITH you, man, on "bloggy" and "bloggy goodness" in general. I admit that I think less of a person if they say "bloggy goodness". It's not fair, but there you are. 90% of bloggers don't have a problem with it, so maybe I felt pressured early on to just "use the lingo" but now, no. I will not use lingo as stupid as "bloggy goodness". I also can't stand "blogosphere", "hat tip" and (as I think I have covered before) all of Glenn Reynolds "hospi-blogging", "photoblogging", "catblogging" and now his most recent ... "razor blogging". God. It makes me WINCE. Just STOP, Glenn, STOP.

Anyway, go read Mitch's list. Very funny stuff.

I need to come up with my own list when I have a second.

And the other piece is:

Things I Like But Probably Shouldn't.

It's such a RELIEF sometimes to just feckin' admit that you love Britney Spears' dance tunes and you don't CARE what anyone thinks.

It reminds me of one of the funnest conversations we've ever had on this blog, actually:

Things I'm not ashamed to admit... but probably should be . If you haven't encountered that piece, then please - I beg of you - read all the comments. You won't be sorry. They're amazing.

I just read in a Reader's Digest (at the Dr's office, no idea how old it was) that Glenn makes $3,000 a month from his blog. That's pretty good incentive not to change a thing.

People always defend Glenn when I dare to criticize him. It's funny. It also proves my point here: that I feel like I'm supposed to like his language choices, and I'm supposed to take his lead ... Like - who says??

I don't think he needs to change anything, and I still check in with him every day but I still think his "hospi-blogging" and "razor-blogging" is feckin' stupid. I hate it.

Speaking of Glenn, I'm pretty sure I saw the term "bloggy goodness" on Instapundit well over two years ago (and I still think he uses it today in reference to Carnival of the Vanities). But then again it could have been Lileks...

Like any coined term, it gets old quick, becoming a worn out cliché (note how "I" found time to add the proper accent mark, unlike some people... aw, who am I fooling, I just avoiding real work this afternoon)

Excellent work with the accents, JFH. I am impressed. :)

And it's really nothing against Glenn - I just think his writing is particularly geeky and wince-inducing. I don't read him for his writing, anyway, I check in with him for the LINKS he provides

i hate - sun-dried tomatoes...the facist foodie trend of the 90's..kept thinking i should like them...but for me they ruin everything they are in.

i love- Judging Amy..i discovered it in reruns on TNT..i'm freakin' hooked... my roomate Alex will often come upon me in my room sobbing openly at some scene with Tyne Daly..she calls it my "Tyne" of the day! Sappy..i know.but i'm a huge fan.

"fascist foodie trend" bwahahaha

Posted by: red at March 30, 2005 3:41 PM

"foodies"...i hate that too! Not the people..the word!

If Reynolds is making $3K a month, he's doing something wrong.

Kos was making $12K/Month before the election.

And I know the guys from Powerline (we co-host a radio show together). Without divulging any confidences, they make significantly more than $3K a month.

No impetus to change at all.

Me? With my $25-45/month blogad receipts, I would change my blog into a mirror for Fugly for a buck right now.

mitch -

Maybe if you started using terms like "bloggy goodness" you would make 3K a month.

Of course, I would stop reading you pronto ... but there's always a downside to things!

It's a community, with all the attendant social conventions of any sort of community. We may be repelled by some of them, but the shared vocabulary or "inside references" are standard devices. Likewise any community has its leaders and trend-setters. But the best things are never the most obvious.

CW:

Standard device or no, you'll never catch me saying "bloggy goodness" or something like: "More Cary-blogging", more "Bogie-blogging."

Come on, folks - it's just a pet peeve. I realize the reasons why lingo occurs, I realize it's an expression of a community - I just don't care for it.

Don't forget the eyeball licking.
