A funny article here which gives you a glimpse of Bacall, age 80, on her book tour.
I like, in particular, this quote from Bacall:
“I am always associated with [Bogart] in people’s minds ‘the greatest love story ever told.’ You can’t get away from that. He’d never believe it, of course… It’s great that he’s still appreciated by so many, because he’s worth it. He was a very special human being, Bogart.”
And here for your viewing pleasure:
And here, what might be my favorite: This was before the romance even blossomed, a publicity shot for To Have and Have Not … but it’s beautifully obvious what was beginning to happen between these two individuals:
She’s 19 years old in that photo, about to embark on her first romance ever.
Finally, maybe the most famous picture of all:
That lovely young girl is 80 years old now, and she’s still around, and not just as a faint echo of who she used to be, a memory in our collective unconscious, but still getting good parts, writing a new book, acting with great directors. Rare.
That last one is a killer.
Those are fantastic, Sheila. Tim and I just watched To Have and Have Not, and I have Dark Passage and Designing Woman waiting for me on Tivo. Tonight, perhaps.
If I had sex appeal like that at NINETEEN, my life would have been completely different. I probably would be a divorcée right now, 3 times over or something. And that voice.
On a different note, I saw Mildred Pierce for the first time last night. Loved it. Would love to hear your insights (and Alex and Mitchell’s) thoughts on that film.
Oh no Red – you have reignited my obsession. You have heard my story of that piano picture before, I’m sure. What I really need to do is come to New York and stalk Ms. Bacall, except I’m sure she wouldn’t appreciate it.
Also you know you’ve had a great life when you’re on the third volume of your autobiography.
CW – You know I live to ignite other people’s obsessions. :)
Oh, and yes, CW – I love your story of that picture.
