A sense-memory of intense joy

... surges through my heart in a crescendo ... at the mere sound of the HBO theme music.

Stayed in a motel a couple weeks ago, and watched a little bit of the HBO as I was getting ready to go to sleep. Found myself humming the tune for much of the next day. It was a little annoying, because the way I dislodge a song from my brain is to listen to it a couple of times. No HBO at the house, and no recordings of the tune.

I really should get a copy, somehow, because it's not the first time it's gotten caught in my head....

I'm so happy I could cry.

Just think about what it will be like when it's Six Feet Under time again.

And here I thought I was the only one who got that warm and fuzzy feeling from the music. My hunch is that it has something to do with them keeping it consistent and thereby being a reminder of my younger, more enjoyable, years.

Of course, that was also before we got Showtime, which pretty much spoiled me and taught me to expect T&A in any movie seen after 10pm. To this day, I cannot watch King of the Hill at 10 for fear of creeping even myself out.

All right, most of you kids aren't old enough to remember this, but there used to be program in the early 70's called Movie of the Week and it featured theme music that was a fully orchestrated crescendo of pure joy. I think it was written by Burt Bacharach and I believe it was called Angie's Theme (after Angie Dickenson). Oh man, that music makes me weep copious tears. The title for it was black background, with red, orange and yellow letters coming at you that said Movie of the Week, reflected and warped like the 2001 Space Odyssey acid trip sequence. LOVE IT!

The other theme music that would turn me to mush was the "Special Presentation" theme, a 5 second drum and trumpet masterpiece that would send my adrenaline pumping and prepare me for The Oscars or The Miss America Pageant or A Charlie Brown Christmas or Roots or The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman or Julie and Carol on Broadway or . . . .

Sigh.

Just looked it up on the web - it was "Nikki's Theme", not Angie's. Nikki is the name of their daughter. It was the ABC Movie of the Week. Doncha love the net?

Dear God, I was just thinking about that a couple weeks ago. A quick Google found me a clip of it. Have I mentioned lately just how much I adore the Internet?
