My good friend Alex describes her first red carpet experience. She was scared going into it, because she knew she would probably meet some of her idols, and she doesn’t have a really good track record in terms of conversing with her favorite stars. After all, this is the woman who saw Broadway legend Chita Rivera in a grocery store, and after taking some time to get up the guts to approach her, went over to Chita – in the frozen food aisle – opened her mouth to say, “Hello” – a simple beginning, right? Where could you go wrong with Hello? You would have had Chita at Hello! But what came out of Alex’s mouth was the word: “Ho.” Barked out in a kind of low and alarming voice. Basically, Alex called Chita Rivera a “ho”. By accident. So naturally, Alex had some anxiety about what would happen at her gala. And there appears to only have been one glitch, where she KEPT saying Stockard Channing’s name – right TO Stockard Channing. “Well, yes Stockard Channing, yes I do. I agree with you wholeheartedly Stockard Channing. Stockard Channing ..thats exactly what I think .Stockard Channing.
Great story, Alex – the only thing missing for me is a description of your outfit. Please tell it to me immediately.
Alex–I figured you would read this, and thought I would comment here. If you don’t remember me, I am your less-than-mean conservative e-mail buddy. I loved this story. My wife, son, and I watched your ER show, and I was happy and proud to say, “There she is–Alex, my internet amiga.” My son, who is 9, was very excited to see my “good friend” on television, and wanted to know all about you. He insisted I show him your site, which I did. You now have at least three fans in the Columbus, OH suburbs. Anyway, you were great on ER, and your Red Carpet story made me happy for you–what an exciting night.
Sheila, there’s a gorgeous pic of Alex at the Glaad awards on glaad.org –
Stevie – Wow, thanks! How beautiful. Alex, dear, no need to tell me what you were wearing. Now I can see the whole thing. You look gorgeous, dahling.
What a thrilling night for Alex! I totally get the say-the-whole-name thing, especially for Stockard Channing. I mean, Miss Channing is definitely reserved for Carol Channing, right? And calling her Stockard? Seems somehow both too intimate and too formal. She probably has a nickname like Stockie or Stock or Ockie.

WOW!!! Wow. I can’t believe my little trip caused your 9 year old to peruse my strange little life. That makes me really, really happy.
And I miss your voice, by the by. :-)
