Blog question ....

Okay, bloggers and general computer-types - can you help? I just received a note from my hosting provider (my web slowdown did have a reason ... It wasn't like how they used to diagnose PMS as being "all in our heads" ... It was real!! haha). Here is what it says - I have bolded the part I don't get. I will obviously contact them as well, but I figure I have enough blog-geeks out there that this might be faster:

The ethernet port on the server that hosts your website is going bad. Several remedies to repair the port were tried this morning but they all failed. This means that the server has to be rebuilt. To prevent any downtime for the websites on this server they will be moved to a new server (the oneida server). The only thing that will change is your IP address. This migration will begin later this evening and take 1 - 2 days to complete. If you manage your own dns or have custom mx entries please notify us immediately so the move of your website to the new server can be coordinated to coincide with your dns updates.

Uhm ... they are assuming a knowledge base I do not have. What is dns? Something to do with "domain name", I presume? But ... what does this mean? Also: What is custom mx entries?

The only part of that I can hope to explain to some degree is that DNS is, indeed, somethng to do with domain names: specifically, with translating URL's into actual IP addresses. Comcast's DNS server for a whole huge section of the country was down about two months ago. It was a real pain, but especially BEFORE they'd figured out that was what the problem was. I spent about four hours on the phone with a Microsoft tech who was clearly at a call center in India trying to fix a non-existent software problem on my end.

"Custom mx entries"? No clue.

So what does that mean for me then? Do I have to do anything with all of my entries?

hahah I just checked my email, and my rep. said I needed to make no changes.

So I guess I'm good.

Hopefully, this server-change will stop the slowdowns.
