South Park

I watched the Scientology episode of South Park last night and laughed so hard my neighbors probably got nervous. When they were explaining the wholke Xenu thing - and the screen below kept flashing: "THIS IS WHAT SCIENTOLOGISTS ACTUALLY BELIEVE" - I couldn't STAND IT.

And R. Kelly with his gun ... I was HOWLING. Then when he joined Tom Cruise and John Travolta in the closet, and you heard his voice singing, "Now I'm in the closet ..."

The Nicole Kidman cartoon was HILARIOUS. Her eyes, her accent!!

The reporter who kept cutting in: "Breaking news ... Tom Cruise is STILL in the closet ..."

And all the brain-washed Scientologists at the end, who were listening to the reincarnation of L. Ron Hubbard giving new information, all taking notes feverishly - their eyes were large and googly (or - more googly than most other South Park characters) - and they listened with baited insane breath.

The voice of Tom Cruise was perfect.

The whole thing was like a big plate of food that is AWFUL for you but tastes SO GOOD you cannot stop eating.

Damn, wish I hadn't missed that episode. I'm having a similar problem with The Boondocks. I hate it, and love it. It's an often brash and somewhat chafing perspective on things, but it's undeniable. I've seen 2 episodes so far, and I've missed the premiere.

Regarding South Park however, they've always been able to get me laughing when I swear I won't. The Lord of the Flies/Children of the Corn episode was beyond funny, and there are so many memorable quotes from the show that singling out one episode isn't really possible for me.

I love animated sit-coms. They can go so much further than the live action.

The episode about the history of the Mormon Church was certainly something that rattled a few cages.

~~dum dum dum dum dumm!!~~

I actually saw a re-run of it- so if you check in with Comedy Central it looks like they're running it repeatedly.

It's hysterical.

South Park and Law and Order marathons are the only reason I regret not having cable.

I recorded it last night, I cannot wait to watch. I love it when they tackle current issues and scandals, and mock the living hell out of it. They're such geniuses.

Here's a link to the episode by the way - looks like it can be downloaded:

Thanks to scienTOMogy!

Operation Clambake's got it as an .avi file as well. Xenu bless 'em.

(PS - did you see that entry at Scientomogy from an independent religious survey that shows there are only about 55,000 Americans that identify themselves as Scientologists? Where's the substantial chunk of the "8 million" that they claim? There are more people that identify themselves as Wiccans than Scientologists!)

Posted by: Emily at November 21, 2005 12:49 PM

I always wondered if that 8 million number was sheer fiction.

Posted by: red at November 21, 2005 12:59 PM

Not pure fiction. They basically count anybody who ever stepped foot into one of their centers as a "member." So, if I go and take their personality test and then never have anything to do with them ever again - which I'm sure more people have done than not - I would be among the "8 million" counted. Kind of the same way Dianetics, the horrifying piece of crap that it is, became a "best seller" by having members buy up the books and send them back to Scientology's publishing house for redistribution. There are booksellers that reported getting shipments of the book with price tags from other stores already on them!

Posted by: Emily at November 21, 2005 1:28 PM

Ah yes - the manipulation of book sales, and Amazon listings. Please!

It's so pathetic, so blatnat - I truly wonder if the scinetology phenomenon will last in the age of the Internet. Before, it was much easier to just send out information into the world - and it was very difficult for people to fact-check you, or find out the real information.

Now - with Clambake and all the other sites - Xenu TV, etc. - it's almost impossible for cults to really HIDE like they used to be able to.

Posted by: red at November 21, 2005 1:37 PM

Sheila: "blatnat"? What?

It sounds like a word from out of Dianetics, come to think of it.

They hailed from the galaxy Blatnat!!

Posted by: red at November 21, 2005 1:37 PM

Or they blatnat their thetans with doses of niacin after a purification rundown to avoid being sec-checked by the OSA.

God, I'm sure you've read stuff written in scientology speak. It's freaky, almost reads like a foreign language.

Posted by: Emily at November 21, 2005 1:42 PM

I honestly hope I am never sec-checked by the OSA. It can't be a pleasant experience.

One of their best episodes, to be certain, second only to the Barbara Streisand and global warming ones.

I love how Parker and Stone try to offend every possible demographic at once, and often succeed. It's an interesting litmus to see if one is capable of laughing at themselves.

Posted by: Mr. Lion at November 21, 2005 3:07 PM

I read an interview with them once where they were describing a time that they bumped into Paris Hilton after the "spoiled whore" episode and she was all thrilled and thought it was cool that they featured her on the show. Parker was like "um...we called you a filthy whore and we meant it. NO, that is NOT COOL."

Posted by: Emily at November 21, 2005 3:11 PM

Just got done watching it. Too damn funny. The closet thing had to be the best part. Oh, and the "Go ahead and sue me! I'm not scared!" And all the credits were John and Jane Smith.

Posted by: Cullen at November 21, 2005 4:18 PM

Hilarious. How Tom Cruise locks himself away because the reincarnation of L Ron Hubbard says he's not as good an actor as "Leonardo diCaprio or Napoleon Dynamite" ...

hahahahahaha

Posted by: red at November 21, 2005 4:21 PM

I'm watching Collateral right now, and all I can think about is "I'm not in a closet."

Posted by: Tainted Bill at November 21, 2005 7:02 PM

Thank you SO much for the link, Sheila. I don't know if I've laughed quite that much in a loooong time.

"THIS IS WHAT SCIENTOLOGISTS ACTUALLY BELIEVE" Hahahahaha!!!

"...and so I pulled out my gun, and I'm gonna' cap some bitch..."

I still am laughing so much it practically hurts.

Posted by: Dave J at November 21, 2005 8:54 PM

DaveJ - i know, right? hahahahahaha

Posted by: red at November 21, 2005 9:08 PM

bill -

Yeah, right, how he keeps just denying he's even in the closet.

"But ... I'm not in here ..."

Posted by: red at November 21, 2005 9:08 PM

And now FactNET has named the "South Park TV show" their "person of the year" for 2005 for this episode. Good on Matt and Trey!
