Well, now I don’t have to watch The Presidents marathon on The History Channel!

    Whee!

  2. red says:

Lisa – I think my cousin Mike was in that.

    hahahaha No, just kidding.

Hope you like my Presidential mania!!

  3. kelly says:

My finger hurts from all the scrolling- I need to take a break. Wait, this is what I do on my break. I need a break from my break. I am so much more of a wimp than any of our founding fathers.

  4. Michael Doherty says:

Your absolute adoration of our founding fathers is well documented on your blog. I enjoy reading through your book snippets and commentaries. The absolute majesty of the way these men shaped and directed our country is astonishing, and one has to wonder where these qualities have gone. I was wondering if you think there are any modern (say post-Civil War) presidents that captured these characteristics as well?

  5. Mabel says:

Yeah, you’ve given me something (meaningful) to do OTHER than work!

  6. Jay says:

    Sheila,

A Presidents Day Blitzkrieg indeed. I can see Stukas dive bombing with Washington and Lincoln quotes instead of munitions. Great, great stuff. One question: How can you even type all of the words that you do each day, let alone come up with insightful and humorous thoughts to put down on paper, or uuhhh I mean word process? It takes me about five minutes just to physically type this little bit. Anyway, a special thanks for including a quote from Dennis Miller. I find him just as eloquent as the other cats, just a lot more entertaining.

  7. red says:

Jay – hahahahahahaha Don’t worry – most of these I have already posted before so it was just a matter of cutting and pasting!

And I LOVE that Dennis Miller quote. Hilarious!!

  8. Nightfly says:

I just want to note, for the record, that on “Presidents” Day, who got the lion’s share of quotes? Washington, Lincoln, Adams, Jefferson. No crap from mediocrities like Van Buren, Hayes, or Tyler. When it comes to holidays for our leaders, I say we leave it to the standouts and let the placeholders fend for themselves down in the footnotes.

  9. red says:

I don’t know, nightfly, I watched a bunch of the History channel marathon yesterday and I thought it was ALL interesting and I’m glad they didn’t only devote time to the big guys.

  10. Nightfly says:

Red – a history special is one thing, but I think a holiday is another. Holidays aren’t just for learning, but for celebrating great deeds. Any history class [or reasonably good documentary ;) ] can tell you about Martin Van Buren or Warren Harding. But given your choice, who do you remember every year, them or Washington?

  11. red says:

But I honestly don’t get your point. I don’t see people walking around shouting “whoo hoo FRANKLIN PIERCE’ on Presidents Day. hahaha It seems to be all about Washington and Lincoln – the two guys whose birthday it was around this time. I don’t see people trying to … make it seem like Millard Fillmore was our greatest president or anything like that.

Besides, lets’ not forget: The job is bigger than the man. Sure we’ve had some great guys fill the position – but I celebrate the position itself far more than I do any one individual. (To quote John Adams: I want a government of laws, not men.)

So that’s what the day is all about for me, personally. But I don’t have your perspective at all – that somehow we’re tyring to “celebrate” “mediocrities”. Just by discussing them doesn’t mean we’re celebrating them. It’s CLEAR that the contributions of Lincoln are far greater than the contributions of Harding – I don’t really hear anyone saying any different.
