A wonderful post of observations about that beloved movie. That's one of my new favorite sites by the way. Burt Bacharach and the Princess Bride? What could be better?
Posted by sheilaOkay, let's just get it out of the way from the start...
Inconceivable!
There. Now we can go on with things as usual.
Posted by: Emily at May 15, 2006 3:33 PMYou keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.
Posted by: Ken at May 15, 2006 3:42 PMDoes anybody have a peanut?
Posted by: Cullen at May 15, 2006 3:47 PMKen-thats my favorite line.
that is one of the funniest movies ever.
Posted by: mere at May 15, 2006 3:49 PM"'Ello. My name is Inigo Montoya. You kill my father. Prepare to die."
Posted by: Emily at May 15, 2006 3:58 PMEver seen "The Hellcats"?
There's a bit player in the movie who looks eerily like Mandy Patinkin. Of course, Joel and the Bots suffered through this experiment pre-Princess Bride, so none of them get to make the joke, but whenever he pops up we all race out with Inigo lines.
(Heheheheh, the photo on imdb is the MST3K tape cover.)
Tangentially on-topic - I wonder if the reminiscence springs from AMC running the movie this past week?
Posted by: Nightfly at May 15, 2006 4:09 PMNightfly - yeah, he mentions AMC in the first paragraph of the post - which began his trip down memory lane.
Posted by: red at May 15, 2006 4:11 PMSee, for me Mandy Patinkin will always be associted with Yentl (YUM) - hottie hot mchotterson!!!
Loved him in Princess Bride too - what a wonderful part for him.
Posted by: red at May 15, 2006 4:12 PMSheila,
Did you ever see him in Run Ronnie, Run? Oh. MY. GOD. The movie's kind of dumb, but worth it for his little cameo alone.
(Not as hot as Eric Bana, of course, because who is ... but there was just something so ... sexy and manly about him in Yentl. He's not my type at all. But for that one role I will make an exception.)
AH - yes - I hadn't gone to the original post before commenting here. Now I see.
BTW, I am abashed - Princess Bride was released in '87, which was three years before Hellcats got dumped onto the Satellite of Love. I'm actually kind of shocked that they missed the joke. If MST3K isn't perfect, then what heroes are left for me?
Posted by: Nightfly at May 15, 2006 4:17 PMAs you wish, Sheila... as you wish...
Posted by: JFH at May 15, 2006 4:18 PMRun Ronnie Run? I don't think I've seen it.
Posted by: red at May 15, 2006 4:18 PMAs great as the various comic lines are, it's the strait ones, possibly because of the contrast, that always stood out to me and were my favorite.
"I want my father back, you son of a bitch!" Spoken with a subtext of "And the last twenty years!"
Peter Falk saying "As you wish" to close the film is my favorite ending ever.
Posted by: Scott Janssens at May 15, 2006 4:29 PMscott - yeah, the movie has a really good heart. It just WORKS.
Posted by: red at May 15, 2006 4:30 PMSheila, I hope to see "Anybody want a peanut?" on the next Movie Quote Day.
Posted by: Mark at May 15, 2006 4:33 PMYeah, I've actually been thinking of doing a new one ... I feel like we are WAY overdue.
Posted by: red at May 15, 2006 4:34 PMThis is funny because I actually quoted the movie to a coworker today - "I swear, it shall be done."
Posted by: Laura(southernxyl) at May 15, 2006 7:43 PMAt least once a week Ceileidh quotes Princess Bride. Usually the Andre the Giant characther. She has an uncanny knack for remembering movie lines. I told you she really is your child, Sheila.
Posted by: Just1Beth at May 15, 2006 8:15 PMcharacther???? I meant character!!
Posted by: Just1Beth at May 15, 2006 8:16 PMI feel I have a very special relationship with this movie: My family watched this show so many times when I was young (I was borne in '84) we all had the lines memorized and would do entire sittings of quoting THE ENTIRE MOVIE. I was the freakin' Dread Pirate Roberts for three years in a row (partially because I was a stagehand for a few years, as a teen). The movie has always held such a majestic charm for me. Love it.
Rubbish! Filth! Slime! Muck!
Posted by: Rick at May 15, 2006 8:28 PMI love Goldman's passage for that - Fezzik bursting into flame, happily chanting "NO SURVIVORS, NO SURVIVORS." But I was always impressed by Yellin. The man stood his ground - at least until he faced life as the Black Knight.
Posted by: Nightfly at May 15, 2006 8:30 PMmy family, like Rick's, is obsessive about this movie. my parents aren't quite as good about it, but they get us started, and there's no turning back. love this movie! can't get enough. we did the Australia part just yesterday in the car.
speaking of movie quotes, besides needing a new one, did anyone ever get that last one that was left last time?? i'm still curious about it...?
Posted by: amelie at May 15, 2006 8:34 PMBecause Sheila's blog is the written equivalent of truth serum, I have to come clean:
I have never seen The Princess Bride.
(Ok, I've seen like 10 minutes on TV, but it's al;ways in the middle and I bail so as not to ruin it.)
Fire at will...
Posted by: Alex Nunez at May 15, 2006 8:56 PMAlex,
See it next or I will take out a contract on you. A MEAN contract.
Alex: It's a moral imperative (movie, anyone?) that you see it.
Also, I have to suggest that people take a read of the adapted work by Goldman. I had a new appreciation of the Savage/Falk scenes, as Goldman writes about his experience with the book that his father read to him and how he discovered it (the book) as an adult. IIRC, in the book, it's not just a pit of despair... it's a 7-level ZOO with increasingly deadly creatures you have to hunt/outsmart ... including s's. So beware if you do decide to read it, Sheila.
Posted by: Ann Marie at May 15, 2006 10:45 PMI'm taking a break from the OHMIGOD! OHMIGOD! Grey's Anatomy season finale to gape open-mouthed at you, Alex.
(This from a woman who's never seen Speed. Go figure.)
Posted by: Lisa at May 15, 2006 10:52 PMLisa - I just emailed you.
Posted by: red at May 15, 2006 11:08 PMOk.
I think I'll be able to watch it by the end of the week. It is, after all, a moral imperative.
Plus, I can't be having mean contracts out on me.
Lisa: Dueling reviews. I'll write up Princess Bride. You do the same for Speed!
Posted by: Alex Nunez at May 16, 2006 12:34 AMDid you watch the season finale of Grey's tonight???? I won't say anything in case you haven't watched it yet, but I freaking love those actors. Katherine Heigl is amazing.
Posted by: Erik at May 16, 2006 2:27 AMSorry my comment had absolutely nothing to do with Princess Bride...how about, ALEX: I'm on the You-Must-See-This-Movie bandwagon.
Posted by: Erik at May 16, 2006 2:28 AMErik..i think Katherine Heigl just got herself an Emmy nomination...she was great..it was great..im hooked.
Posted by: mitchell at May 16, 2006 8:25 AMMitchell, that's exactly what I was saying all night..."I think Katherine Heigl just got herself an Emmy nomination"...then Cristina had that scene with Webber and that made me cry and I was like, "did Sandra Oh just steal Katherine Heigl's Emmy nom????" But then Katherine Heigl stole it right freaking back with the last twenty minutes of the episode.
SO GOOD.
Posted by: Erik at May 16, 2006 4:44 PMOh, Erik, TOTALLY!! I usually love Christina, but last night I was hating her. "You are such a wimp! You are a cold hearted BEYOTCH!!" I kept turning to my husband saying, "I fucking hate her now. She is dead to me!" Then that scene with Webber. Now I love her again. My heart cracked. And Izzie broke my heart into little shards. and the prick doctor, when he picked her up like a little girl, and soothed her, made me actually have hope for him. a teeny bit. I love that show.
Posted by: Just1Beth at May 16, 2006 5:51 PMSheila, I seriously hope you've watched the Grey's finale because I don't want to say anything on your comment thread that might spoil anything, and I kinda feel like I've hijacked this comment post with Grey's comments, but Beth, that moment with Alex at the end of the episode killed me. I've always actually had a soft spot for Alex. I think he's an ass, but it feels real, and it feels motivated by a lot of damage, and I really feel for him, and moments like that moment last night make me love him even more.
Posted by: Erik at May 16, 2006 6:10 PMErik,
Click on my name -- Sheila and I are discussing GA there! (Well, we were, but work got in the way.) /shameless blog pimping
Posted by: Lisa at May 16, 2006 7:19 PMOh- I completely agree with you Erik about Alex. It is a total love/hate thing with him. I kinda can't stand him, then I let him in and start to really really let my guard down, then he does something horrid and then I HATE him. Then he does something like last night and then I love him again. That is why this show is so good. A roller coaster of emotions. You don't love or hate the characters all the time.
Posted by: Just1Beth at May 16, 2006 10:05 PMDid anyone recognize the woman who played the firm and angry other doctor - the one who ended up doing the heart transplant, even though HER patient lost the heart?
Without Googling - does anyone know who she is??
Posted by: red at May 16, 2006 10:07 PMHint: she was absolutely unforgettable in a GIANT major motion picture.
Posted by: red at May 16, 2006 10:10 PMPlease tell me
She was the girl in the bottom of the well in Silence of the Lambs
Posted by: red at May 16, 2006 10:17 PMI'm mad I missed the Brooke Smith question!! I would have gotten it--she was the woman at the bottom of the well in Silence of the Lambs!
