... (and you know are a totally unapologetic geek) when the fact that June 16 approaches gives you such a thrill of delight and anticipation that you almost can't wait.
The work has already begun .... It's gonna be a doozy!
Posted by sheilaI had to scroll all the way to the bottom of Wikipedia's "June 16" page to find out what in the hell you're talking about. You *are* a geek. :)
Posted by: Lisa at June 5, 2006 10:24 PMThis is my 4th year in a row celebrating this on the blog!
Posted by: red at June 5, 2006 10:33 PMwow, sheila; that's cool ; )
Posted by: amelie at June 5, 2006 10:53 PMAs a Sheila stalker, of course I know what this means, however there are two things that could make some geek think differently if their trivia knowledge is only tangential to the REAL event:
1) Juneteenth: to be honest I had to look it up to know which "teenth" this African-American holiday occurred. (I'm sure I'm gonna get hammered for not knowing this date, but I can't know everything... despite what I tell my son)
2) Bloomsday is also a big deal in Spokane, Wa which occurs in May and has nothing to do with Joyce... In fact, when I read in some article that Bloomsday was celebrated on May 24 in Washington, I was shocked that Red had let the holiday come and gone without a post until I realized this was a DIFFERENT Bloomsday.
Here's the thing and I may have commented on this before, Joyce is far too deep for me. I barely understood A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man (even with the Cliffs Notes!... and this is from a guy that "got" The Sound and the Fury once it was explained via the same aid) let alone Ulysses and, obviously, Finnegans Wake...
Maybe it's "an Irish thing"
Posted by: JFH at June 6, 2006 12:27 AMJFH - ah yes, I understand. Many people have that response, and that's fine.
However - a ton of the people who read me DO love Joyce and are crazy about him like I am - so June 16th is for them. (And for me, of course.)
As a matter of fact, a month ago some random person emailed me - someone who doesn't comment here regularly but obviously has been reading me for years - and said, "Hope you're planning something for Bloomsday!"
Yes! I am!!
Posted by: red at June 6, 2006 7:22 AMGeekhood by osmosis...years ago I would have had no idea what you were talking about...now, though...I have developed yet another facet to my own already-present geekiness. Bring it on!
Posted by: Jayne at June 6, 2006 7:52 AMGeek by osmosis ... hahahahaha
Posted by: red at June 6, 2006 8:00 AM:) I feel so close to Joyce right now!
Posted by: RTG at June 6, 2006 8:57 AMEven if I DIDN'T like Joyce (and he's not at the top of my list, as much as I do enjoy him), the whole Bloomsday thing would be fun anyway.
Although sorry to say I won't be in NYC yet again. Maybe next year!
Posted by: mitch at June 6, 2006 10:05 AMAlthough I've still to read anything by Joyce, past Bloomsday celebrations on this blog have roused my curiosity; I have Ulysses on my bookshelves, waiting until I get the nerve to plunge into it. I will, eventually... In the meantime, I am looking forward to whatever it is that you have prepared for us this June 16, Sheila! As Jayne said: Bring it on!!! :)
Posted by: Ceci at June 6, 2006 11:38 AMmitch - Same time next year!! :)
Posted by: red at June 6, 2006 12:18 PMYou are going to write about Bloomsday when the world is suffering from poverty, injustice, war and famine? What in the hell is wrong with you?
(I'm sorry, but I will never tire of taking the piss out of that fool who gave you grief for writing about Joyce instead of Abu Ghraib or whatever. Like you were Nero fiddling while Rome burned or CNN ignoring the story or something.)
