Hat Day Makes People Angry

We have a friend who is a hat designer. Her hats are works of art – they’re plushy, crushy, impractical, fun. I have one of my own. They’re whimsical and gorgeous. So she was trying to start up her business – she had opened her own studio – so we went to a nearby street fair – all of us WEARING one of her hats – holding fliers and cards – basically being walking billboards for Christina. People were surprisingly really snotty – even though it was a street fair with tons of local artists showing their work. We heard one person say, as we walked by, “Oh. What. Is today Hat Day?” in a really snotty voice. Well, yes, frankly, it IS Hat Day, and apparently it is ALSO Corn-Cob-Up-Your-Ass-Day if your behavior is any clue. Why don’t you chill out?? Have fun. Don’t be so “over” everything. Sheesh.

Christina, who often said that she “woke up in order to hyperbolize”, later characterized this entire experience as: “The Day We Almost Got Killed”. One snotty comment = bloody murder.

Anyway, there are a lot of funny (and good) pictures of that day – Mitchell took this one. Here we all are on The Day We Almost Got Killed.

Hahahahahaha! You look adorable in that hat. Are there flowers on it? I can’t tell so much.

Also: Love the saddle shoes! And are these the same leggings from the film noir camping trip? Hahaha. What is the flowy red thingy?

Plus I love how you and the girl in the middle look almost like you’re standing in ballet positions. Quirky yet graceful.

    /Corn-Cob-Up-Your-Ass-Day/

    HAHAHAHAAHAHA!!

  3. red says:

As I recall it was a reversible hat (a lot of her hats are) – so there were flowers on the outside, and a flat color on the inside – and she also would make these amazing pins out of fabric, and velvet, and felt – pins of butterflies, or autumn leaves, or spring leaves – and I pinned some of those around the brim.

The girl in the middle is Christina – the hat designer herself!!

I MISS those saddle shoes. I wore them until they fell apart. I wore them with EVERYTHING.

  4. red says:

Oh – and I think I put that scarf through a couple of the belt loops that were on the bottom of my jeans jacket. I also wore that red scarf with everything. I wore it around my head. I put it around my neck, a la Natalie Wood. I wrapped it around my waist as a belt. I was poor poor POOR at this point in my life and that entire outfit was bought at the Salvation Army and I wore everything to pieces!!

And yeah, people seemed to just get MAD at us for wearing hats and having fun wearing hats. Losers. We almost got killed that day.

  5. red says:

Oh, and Tracey – thank you for BEING HERE WITH ME on a Friday night SUPPORTING ME in my scanner experimentations!! After all that trouble – it’s so fun to finally have it work!

  6. tracey says:

Well, it IS the most awesome thing ever! Seriously. I am HAPPY to be here!

And I love the whole outfit there. I had a pair of saddle shoes I, uh, stole basically after playing Lucy in “You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown.” Wore them all the time, too.

I think the Corn-Cob-Up-the-Ass people were jealous that you were all corn-cob free, frankly.

Just take your Ass Cob and STEP OFF, people!

  7. red says:

Yeah- and buy a hat! Join the whimsy! Don’t be a drip! Come stroll with us wearing silly hats on a gorgeous summer day!

  8. red says:

Oh and my boyfriend at the time (Window-Boy) referred to me as “Lucy Van Pelt” because of those shoes.

He’d say to Mitchell at some crowded bar: “Yeah, well I’m ready to go – but Lucy van Pelt over there has to say goodbye to her friends for the 10th time.”

  9. red says:

Oh, and I just have to say this:

    Do you know something Schroe-DER?
I think the way you play the piaaaaaaaaaaaaano
    is nice

  10. tracey says:

    Hahahahaha!

They’re practical, too, ya know. Easy to spot in a crowd. Helpful, actually.

  11. red says:

Totally!! Cause who the heck wears saddle shoes anymore?

    “Have you seen my wife?”
“Uhm … there are 50 people in this room … no, I haven’t seen her.”
“Er – she’s wearing saddle shoes.”
    “Oh! She’s right over there.”
    “Thanks!”

  12. jackie says:

wow…….. such memories. As I recall some asshole said: “oh I get it, they wear hats”, in a really snotty way. I am very excited about your scanner she!

    xxoo

  13. tracey says:

    Doya know something else?
It’s always been my dream that I’d marrrry
A man who plays the piaaaaaaaaaaaano ….

  14. red says:

hahahaha “Oh, I get it … they wear hats …”

Jackie! hahaha Like: WHAT was up that person’s ass? Why did it bother them so much???

  15. red says:

    Poor Schroeder.

  16. alli says:

hey be nice to lucy. I played her in “you’re a good man, charlie brown” in 2003. i love her. ;)

i LOVE these hats. even if you did almost get killed that day.

  17. sarahk says:

i LOVE it! i would have worn a hat for you! and it’s so nice to put a face with the name.

btw, i’m sitting in my Boise hotel reading your snippets and looking at your Sleestak eyes in the top picture and thinking, ah, Sheila, my artsy friend in New York. she wears a funny hat.

i don’t know why i felt the need to tell you such a thing just now. maybe it’s those hilarious shoes and the fact that your Sleestak eyes made me feel such a strong bond with you. or it’s because you used the actual S-word. who even knows that word but us, Marshall, Will, and Holly?

  18. Alex says:

    You guys look FABULOUS!!!!!!

  19. just1beth says:

Congrats on the scanner-ability. I envy your techno savvy ways. As far as Window Boy saying you had to say goodbye to 10 friends: My sister Kathy, I have always thought, is the quietest of the four Drennan sisters. Apparently not. Her friend’s son has coined a phrase. (He only knows Kathy, not the other three of us. When it is time to leave a place with his mother, and she is starting to say goodbye, he asks, “Are we REALLY leaving, or DRENNAN leaving???”

  20. mitchell says:

o.m.g. ur scanner is the beginning of the rest of my life!!!!…ive been so crazy with rehearsing that ive been away from u….that was such a funny day…”we were almsot killed!”..she is truly a work of art herself!

  21. red says:

Mitchell – I should have written “Mitchell AND Jackie will laugh at this one” – I don’t know why i didn’t!! The hat you wore that day was awesome – that little skull cap – I have some great pictures of you and Christina with the hats on.

and yes – christina IS a work of art.
