I have been meaning to see Perfume for weeks now (not to mention reading the book – it sounds just great – and bizarre – I read reviews thinking: Wait … the book is about what??) And the movie sounds marvelous, but I keep getting sidetracked (Hi, Rocky Balboa, how you doin’?) – but it sounds like my kind of movie frankly.
Matt Zoller Seitz has a great review. I love:
This sounds like a summary of one of the most distasteful film ever made — or at the very least, one of the campiest. Perfume is perpetually at risk of becoming either (or both). But it never entirely succumbs.
Patient:
Doctor, I’ve been dying to see Perfume, the story of a man who has an extraordinary sense of smell but I can’t pull myself away from the Rocky series.
Doctor:
Don’t worry. We can get you the help you need!!!
Sheila, you crack me up.
Hahahaha Rocky Balboa is a huge magnetic force right now …
In lieu of seeing Rocky III last night – I watched Copland (a movie I already own). That was satisfying too because it was so different and everyone was so good in that.
Ooooo, Alan Rickman! In a wig! Squee!
I looooooves me some Rickman.
Alan Rickman!! ***swoon***
To stay on topic (hehe), I can highly recommend “Perfume” (the book; I haven’t seen the movie). It’s really something else… I can’t imagine how they adapted the book for the movie, but it should be interesting to see, at the very least! And now that I mention it, what with the movie coming out and all, I should follow my own advice and re-read the thing…
…did someone say Alan Rickman?
(I’ve never read the book [or seen the movie for that matter]. It’s one of those books that I want – in theory – to read, but I never seem to get around to in practice. Kind of like the huge Proust series, or “Tristram Shandy.”)
Ceci – I really have to read it. Glad to hear you liked it!
It’s on the ol’ reading list. I was hoping to get to it before I saw the movie – but now I’m afraid I’ll miss the movie being in the theatres. So I might just have to go this week and read the book later.
Be careful as you move up the Rocky ladder. It’s like eating too much cheese. If you can get through Rocky V I will send you a care package of Metamucil and Pepto Bismol.
Bren – hahahaha I have seen them all. I read some review that said “Even die-hard fans won’t see Rocky V”. Bad. I know.
I know, I know. But he came back … with the perfect ending to the franchise!! What a bummer if he had left it with Rocky V.
Dinput – ha! That’s so weird (book questionnaire, etc.)
I will definitely read it. It sounds terrific – and really really ODD. Which I like.
