In honor of the first Sunday of Lent

... here is my impression of Heaven.

Michael - I am dying to talk with you about Paradise Alley. Holy crap! His writing is what really struck me. It's almost pure Odets. Amazing. I realize that I am communicating with you through my blog which is strange and dysfunctional ... but whatevs. Paradise Alley!!!

God I love tonight.
But my twisted mind is thinking...how many references will there be to Judge Fonze?

There's no circus here, my friend.

Sheila -- I see "Cliffhanger" there. Have you actually watched that one yet? Uhm, the opening few moments, in particular?

tracey - yes, I have seen it! I actually saw it in the movie theatre. haha

D - huh? Last time I checked, Sly was not in Field of Dreams.

WHERE IS OSCAR?!?!?!

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

I know!! I know!! That's a huge missing piece there. My bad!!

And the lack of Rocky II also haunts me.

Cliffhanger- Loved it when I saw it, but for some reason it's not a "stop and watch" movie for me when it comes on TV. I think it's the bad guys' performance, just TOO over the top...I mean it's a "fun" movie, actors are supposed to play the villians "over the top", but the 2nd or 3rd viewing didn't work for me like, say, Die Hard. Lithgow, especially... I just don't know why he can't play the villian (IMHO) as well as he plays other characters.

That said, even though I hate it, I can't NOT watch the first scene when Sly tries to rescue his best friend's girlfriend. Her looking up with her blue eyes and pleading to Sly not to let go is VERY haunting.

JFH - oh God, that moment is just horrible. gives me shivers.

Posted by: red at February 27, 2007 10:08 AM

And JFH - your problem with Cliffhanger is a problem for me with movies like that, too. I get bored with action movies, if the morality is too black and white.

That's why Cagney remains a fascinating and mysterious star. Even when he played a bad guy, you were kind of on his side because he was the most interesting complex character up there.

I get VERY bored with the kind of telegraphing-to-the-morons-in-the-audience "morality" of those big ol' action movies.

Even Stallone in that movie. I mean, I think he's good enough as an actor that he always brings a level of ambiguity to whatever he's doing - he seemed like a real guy in the film - but still. It doesn't hold my interest.

His LEGS, however, in that movie, will hold my interest until I am 97 years old.
