Oh God - that's the problem with the commonplace book - sometiems I do not put down WHERE I found it. I think it was in a speech he gave - a graduation speech at Yale, maybe? Let me do some digging I might be able to find it.

Okay, I'm insane - I found it. It was in an essay Mark Twain wrote for the Chicago Tribune, in 1871.
