The Tonys

I can barely read this recount of the gathering because i'm frankly angry that I wasn't there. Damn ALL OF YOU TO HELL.

I love how much Mitchell despises Phylicia Rashad. It makes me so happy. I love to get him going off about it.

I also love how Alex had a mini-stroke about Ben Vereen and Usher.

Congratulations, Christine Ebersole - and Mary Louise Wilson! Well deserved!!!

Full list of winners.

Gasp! Alex dared besmirch the name of the almighty Bernadette! Perhaps if I light a few candles around my shrine, the balance of the universe will be restored.

Although, I do wonder if Bernadette will still have that 'do when she's, like, 70 or whatever. There comes a time in a woman's life when she has to surrender to the inevitability of the more sensible brush cut. Sad, but true.

Curly - hahahaha I KNEW you would comment on the Bernadette line! hee hee

I think it would be hysterical if she were a 90 year old grande dame with that 'do. Can you imagine? By that point, it'd be like: why change now??

I'm so predictable with my defense of Bernadette, aren't I though? It's ridiculous. I even got a little miffed with the cast of "Forbidden Broadway" a few years back. They skewered Bernadette and Mandy Patinkin in spectacular fashion. Sure, it was funny but my feathers were a tad ruffled.

Her hair is as much a signature as her voice (and frequent bouts of polyps because of her technique) so I bet she'll be buried with that hairdo!

I can't help but think of "All the Way" Mae from A League of Their Own (Madonna's character). She had the dark, barrel curls parted in the middle when she played baseball as a young woman... And then she had the dark (with a shock of gray) barrel curls parted in the middle when she showed up at the Hall of Fame as an elderly woman. I guess there's something to be said for consistency.

I love your defense of Bernadette.

I'm bummed I didn't get to see the Tonys - did you get to watch??

I saw some of the arrivals on NY1 and a bit of the ceremony but then I switched over to HBO to watch the finale of The Sopranos.

Sadly, I haven't seen too much theater this past season so I had no real horse in the race. However, I adore Christine Ebersole and I was happy to see her win. I did see The Little Dog Laughed and Julie White stole the show so I was glad she won. She was hilarious in that show.

It's shocking to me how little interest I have in the Tonys now. There was a time that I was standing outside the show every year watching the people going in. Then they moved the ceremony to Radio City and the whole thing became less intimate. The year before it moved to RC, I managed to get into the dress rehearsal when the show was held at the Palace Theater. I saw 50 years of Tony winners on stage practicing and goofing around with each other. That was also the year that Julie Andrews rejected her nomination because she felt like the rest of her cast was overlooked. Oh, the drama!

Alas, no more. I've outgrown it, I guess. This whole growing up thing kind of stinks sometimes.

Woah - major drama!!

Oh, and I haven't seen the Sopranos finale yet - NO SPOILERS!!

Posted by: red at June 11, 2007 11:53 AM

Don't go to my blog then.

Posted by: curly mcdimple at June 11, 2007 12:02 PM

Good to know. Yes, I've had to avoid many blogs today.

I will stay strong and firm - The same thing's gonna happen when the new Harry Potter comes out. i will have to hole myself up with the book, avoid all blogs, and read it like a maniac to keep all spoilers out of my existence.

Posted by: red at June 11, 2007 12:04 PM

No danger of Harry Potter spoilers. Would you believe I have not read a single book in that series? Not opposed to it, mind you, but I just never did. Oh, and you're the second person in as many days to tell me that she will be holed up reading that book the weekend it's released.

Posted by: curly mcdimple at June 11, 2007 1:01 PM

I have so much else I want to read right now - but I seriously feel like I will need to read the Harry Potter INSTANTLY and bump all other books down the list - just so I won't hear any spoilers.

Weird!!

I wish I'd seen at least one episode of the Sapranos, so I'd have even the slightest idea what in the hell everybody in the WORLD is talking about today.

I do something similar with American Idol or the show 24. It doesn't matter what time I get home, I MUST sit down and watch it or else I worry that I'll find out the results accidentally the next day. And I get really grouchy when that happens. I want to discover it on my own, thank you very much. So, my point is, I completely relate.

Posted by: curly mcdimple at June 11, 2007 1:55 PM

Emily, rent the DVDs! It's well worth it, I promise.

Posted by: curly mcdimple at June 11, 2007 1:58 PM

My dad is a recent convert - he got all the DVDs recently and has been watching them in succession.

My issue is that I haven't seen one episode THIS season - so I need to hang on until they come out on DVD to see the whole thing. I just don't want to know what's coming ... since it really could go either which way.

Posted by: red at June 11, 2007 1:59 PM

Curly,
I've been meaning to for ages, especially since my homey Peter Bogdanavich eventually shows up in the series. I'll get around to it someday.

Posted by: Emily at June 11, 2007 2:00 PM

Sheila,
My problem is I always come late to these things, so I miss out on being a part of all the great conversations about them. Three years from now, I'll pop up and be all, "so, how about that Sapranos ending? Wasn't that something?" And everybody else will be bored with it, having long moved on to whatever's new...*sigh*. Woe is lonely fandom!

Posted by: Emily at June 11, 2007 2:18 PM

Oooh, Peter Bogdanavich! He's great. My claim to fame is Satriale's, a frequent location in the show, is on the main drag in the town where I grew up. Also, a gym teacher from my high school ended up with a role on the series... and then got whacked. That was weird to see!

I tend to miss the boat with a lot of things myself. I got caught up on the earlier seasons thanks to HBO On Demand. It's been consistently good over 8 years. It's one show that actually lives up to the hype.

My friend David had a nice scene in one of the episodes - that's my claim to fame!

He played an FBI agent, trying to engage the Polish maid in conversation ... It was a great scene and I was proud of him.

I have to echo your feelings on the Harry Potter. Someone once spoiled Anna Karenina for me while talking in a theater before the movie started. I turned around and said, "I can't believe you just did that. I haven't read that yet." They gaped at me like a fish. I certainly don't intend to relive that episode!

Posted by: Ted at June 11, 2007 2:38 PM

Ted - oh no!! And that book has that surprise ending ... I acutally didn't know the ending going into it, and I nearly fell over when I got to that part.

Posted by: red at June 11, 2007 2:45 PM

I mean, that ending scene in Anna K.

You know, you have 20 chapters on the threshing and haying practices of Odessa and then ...
THAT!!

Posted by: red at June 11, 2007 2:46 PM

I've blocked the threshing...and haying.

Posted by: Ted at June 11, 2007 6:04 PM

You're lucky.
