A must-read:

A sunbeam in the abyss.

A thoughtful and really moving piece of writing. Thank you, Matt. I've been staying away from most commentary about Owen Wilson (and all the simplistic and ignorant attitudes about fame, comedians, and depression - in particular - that are ususally par for the course with such commentary) - because I knew it would grate on my nerves. Your piece is affirming and sensitive - not just about Wilson, and what you picked up on in his personality - but also about depression. For me, he's always been a bright spot in any movie he shows up in. Unlike the folks who somehow find this ODD, in lieu of his suicide attempt - it makes perfect sense to me. Despair doesn't look just one way. And one is not incompatible with the other. Let's hope he recovers, and can continue to be productive.

I've always liked Wilson's work, and it makes me kind of sick to see the news-vultures circling and the things they're saying.

I join you in hoping he recovers and can continue to be productive.

I really like Owen's work, too. As you say, Sheila, he lightens up the screen with his presence. That is something that I admire in any artist, and something I am grateful for.

I sincerely hope he can recover and continue working for many, many years.

I hope Owen gets back all the way, and has a happy life. Thanks for linking this, Sheila. It's terrific stuff.

For some reason Ive missed all the initial reports of whats happened, but so agree with you and the gentleman you linked. I truly hope he finds recovery and the blessings of life, which are not material things, as we seem to think it should be. I think sometimes its hard for us to imagine that someone who APPEARS to have it all might still feel isolation and despair. He's human, for pete's sake!!!
