Movies and stuff

I got this list from Tracey ... I changed the rules, though. To me, there's an enormous difference between like and love - so I changed the rules and separated out "like" from "love".

THE RULES
Bold movies you have watched and liked.
Turn red movies you have watched and loved.
Italicize movies you saw and didn’t like.
Leave as is movies you haven’t seen.

No comments on this one. [UPDATE: comments opened now - thanks for the link House Next Door] You can email me your outrage or support, should you feel it necessary. (Okay, someone just emailed me with one word: "Support." It made me laugh out loud. Thank you!) I'm just fading fast today, and feel kind of anxious. And I have hours to go before I sleep. And a flight out of town tomorrow at the crack of doom (I believe Macbeth says that somewhere. Yes. He does.
'Why do you show me this? A fourth! Start, eyes!
What, will the line stretch out to the crack of doom?
Another yet! A seventh! I'll see no more.')

Anyway. Here's the list. Feel free to do ye olde meme if you want to.

Looking at this list all together it is clear that I am biased towards movies made before 1960. I just prefer them. Also some people go apeshit when they hear I don't like a particular movie. That's okay. I like Finnegans Wake and lots of people think I'm crazy, too.

How about italic red for "despise"? Or to avoid confusion, italic all caps, as in "hate the movie so much I'm shouting"?

I am going to heartily recommend Once Upon a Time In the West.

Henry Fonda is cast completely against type as a vicious, hateful bad guy. He's mesmerizing. Leone was specific in that he wanted Hank's blue eyes to remain blue (Fonda was ready to wear contacts, apparently) to maximize the disconnect between the public's image of him and the dark persona he adopted for this particular screen character.

Charles Bronson is also quietly excellent in this.

Many of my not-seen movies are on my Netflix queue as we speak - and Once Upon a Time in the West is definitely one of them!

Oops ... hahahaha it's just me, sheila ... but I'm on Mitchell's computer - which is why I signed "mitchell sheila" ... although it is true that we are so close we are nearly one person.

I'd like to second the recommendation of Noonz.
The whole movie was mesmerizing.
I'd love to read your thoughts on it once you do see it.

And if I may, I'd also suggest "Touch Of Evil".
The opening scene is amazing and I couldn't take my eyes of Welles whenever he was in a scene.

I'll also be interested to hear what you think about Once Upon a Time in the West. I did this little exercise on my site and flagged it as a "like," but that's due more to respecting it than actively enjoying it. Also, I have friends whose opinions I generally trust who just detest it.

Back in the 1980s when I first saw it, I recommended it to the guy who was cutting my hair at the time...big mistake. Next haircut, he spent the entire haircut complaining - with passion - about the pointlessness of it all, with special relish devoted to the opening scene. For a minute there, I thought he was going to cut my nose off.

But one thing EVERYBODY seems to agree with is that the soundtrack by Ennio Morricone is magnificent.

Lovely list... lot to agree with there! Touch of Evil, is a very good suggested addition... great film... I love some of Welles's other Shakespeare films, particularly the quizical "Chimes At Midnight" but Sheila... Sheila... What about "It's a Wonderful Life"??

Posted by: Simon C at March 4, 2008 3:52 AM

Chimes at Midnight is great. It has a bit of a wonky beginning though, but that is a minor concern in an otherwise fine, fine film.

It's a bitch to get hold of, mind...
