A certain ship set sail from Southampton, England.
And a certain young lady in financial stress meets a certain young gadabout artist who steals her heart (even though she is "a spoiled brat" and "no picnic") and changes her life forever.

A mere five days later:

I find that picture, and any actual picture of the Titanic, haunting. From my first reading of A Night To Remember as a kid to seeing every movie and documentary on it imaginable I have always been fascinated by the ship. Whenever I see a photo of it I immediately start to see that massive liner sinking in a dark empty sea. And it gives me chills.
Posted by: Jonathan Lapper at April 10, 2008 9:10 AMIt makes an all-too-apt parable about life. All the expectation and surface glitz, yet fleeting and soon gone--always too soon, and in this case, absurdly so. Wow, that was cheerful.
Posted by: DBW at April 10, 2008 10:29 AMJonathan - it totally gives me the chills, too. Seeing something that only has days to survive - and all the souls onboard, unknowing. Whoosh - it was gone. How is that possible?? It still boggles the mind (which I guess just goes to show you that not too much has changed in human nature!).
