Jonathan Rosenbaum's 10 Underappreciated John Ford Films is a must-read.
Posted by sheila | TrackBackFor some reason, *3 Godfathers* seems to get overlooked when it comes to talk of Ford masterpieces. I will go to war for that movie.
But I'm glad he mentions *Judge Priest*. The scene of Rogers sitting at the foot of his bed, talking to a mounted picture of his wife, is reason enough to rent it.

Personally I find 7 WOMEN a little goofy, but THE SUN SHINES BRIGHT is one of my favorites and comfortable territory for Ford by reworking his Fox Will Rogers material. I think it's better than the Rogers originals. The funeral procession is classic Ford, sentimental and tottering on the brink of corny, but it still manages to play sincere and true. A wonderful film.
LONG VOYAGE HOME, WAGON MASTER, and LONG GRAY LINE are also Ford gems. I'm going to have to watch MOGAMBO again after reading Rosenbaum. Oh crap, now I have to wait around for BUCKING BROADWAY...
