Sam Shaw’s artistry: Marilyn Monroe

I adore these photos.

When I did After the Fall, I gave these two photos to the amazing costume designer, to give her an idea of what I was thinking for the first costume. I didn’t want it to be va-va-voom, not too much – I wanted it to be the character’s version of what is ladylike and sweet. A summery dress, white gloves … sweet. Here is what the costume designer came up with. God, I loved that dress.

Here’s the inspiration.

I’m in love with that dress… so simple, so purely white and yet so sexy, but elegantly so. Well, Marilyn wearing it certainly helps, haha!
You sure know that moments after the pic at the fountain was taken, Marilyn was swallowed by a crowd asking her for autographs and pics, young men, kids, old women… those candids are just beautiful. The fascination of one Marilyn Monroe just wandering like that around New York…

I love how she is shopping for ties in that first one. And where is she? At first I thought it was a subway station, but now I’m thinking no – it’s gotta be Macy’s.

    Do you know, Ceci?

You got me. I have no idea where she is shopping! But from other photos of this series, she seems to be shopping out of a store on the street, and not from a mall or anything like that. At least, that’s my impression…
