Well, well, this is thrilling news. There’s a new documentary called I Knew It Was You: Rediscovering John Cazale, which had its debut at Sundance and should premiere on HBO. How thrilling. Interviews with all the people who knew this great actor from the 1970s who died way too young: John Savage, Meryl Streep (his girlfriend at the time), Robert DeNiro, Francis Ford Coppola, Al Pacino … It’s going to be incredible. How often does THIS happen? A great and beloved actor – who created parts that live on in the memory – but who passed away even before he hit his prime … gets such a tribute? I am just so glad this is happening, and I can’t wait to see it.

I would love to see this. Out here in the “sticks,” we’re still waiting to see The Sound of Music. I hear the “hills are alive.”
I don’t think it’s going to be distributed – I think its premiere will be on HBO so there will be no having to wait for it to arrive to a theatre near you.
This has been in the works for a while, has it not? I can’t wait. And I really should have included Cazale in my latest FACES I LOVE, because I can’t remember if I ever have or not. Thanks for the heads-up, Sheila!
Dennis – I am sure it has been in the works for a while but this is the first I’ve heard of it and I am seriously just so psyched!!
His performances just were so much a part of me becoming a film fan, acting fanatic, fanatic in general. Especially Dog Day Afternoon which I watched one fateful night when I was babysitting at the age of 12. Most of it went over my head but I remember my experience of seeing that film so vividly.
I saw him on stage with Al Pacino in Arturo Ui back in 1975. I can’t honestly say I remember it in detail but I do recall that the people I went with and I all thought Cazale was the outstanding member of the cast – not easy to do with Pacino in the lead role.
Steve – wow! I would so have loved to see that!
Awesome. John was great in everything.
