It’s Natasha Richardson’s birthday.
I have seen a couple of live performances I will never forget, performances where I think as they are happening: I am so lucky to have witnessed this.. It’s rare. Natasha Richardson, in Cabaret, gave one of those performances.
In all my life, I have never seen such a performance. Before or since. I feel so fortunate I went to see it with my friend Brooke, and we got such amazing seats, right up front (this was in its earliest run, when you sat at little tables like you were at the Kit Kat Club).
I wrote about Richardson’s performance of Sally Bowles on House Next Door, as a tribute, a couple of days after she died, tragically, way too young.
Two clips of Richardson’s performance below:
Thank you so much for stopping by. If you like what I do, and if you feel inclined to support my work, here’s a link to my Venmo account. And I’ve launched a Substack, Sheila Variations 2.0, if you’d like to subscribe.
What a shame.
Happy Birthday, Remembered Natasha!
What a hell that family has had in the last year or so. I still can’t believe she’s gone, you know?
She was so lovely.
The first time I saw her was in The Copper Beeches, with Jeremy Brett.
I absolutely adored her. You know how sometimes you are just drawn to an actor? That’s how I felt about Natasha Richardson. I mean, I hadn’t seen too much of her work outside of “The Parent Trap”. Living in South Africa made seeing much of her filmography so hard, but I just LOVED her. Love her.
Nicola – yes, much of her film work for whatever reason is just not readily available. Like Patty Hearst – which apparently is coming out in a new edition – let me find the info. I just watched it – I saw it in the movie theatre back in the day, because I was so fascinated by that story.
Did you see that The Comfort of Strangers is going to be released on Criterion?
YES. I just got the newsletter! You read my mind. I gasped! I saw that in the theatre back in the day.
When I was a KID it was at this tiny video shop close to my house and I immediately got it out because NATASHA RICHARDSON. And then made the mistake of watching it with my grandmother. Dear lord. The regret.
