Where Do I Sign Up To Pledge This Sorority?

Sorority Sisters (Tri-Deltas), University of Texas, 1944.

There’s too much that I love about this photo (every last stinking detail) that it’s useless to even discuss it. All I will say is: these girls seem FUN.

Isn’t that you seated on the floor? It’s like the last shot of The Shining!

Truly, this picture is a work of art–the more time you spend, the more rich detail you find. (It’s like a van Eyck painting but way funnier.) I especially love the contrast between the posing girl on the right and the expressions of the two girls on the right. This reminded me of my townhouse roommates from college (in spirit, not in detail–we were on a dry, non-smoking campus in the Northeast!)–so much so that I emailed them all the picture!

I love that the posing girl on the right may look the most conventional – like she’s smiling for a school photo – but then you scroll down and see the Fuck Me Pumps and that other image is obliterated.

And I’m with you – this reminds me of the gang of girls I hung out with in college (we’re all still friends). There are so many photos of us like this – where we’re all posing, and taking on characters – or re-creating the Charlie’s Angel posters or something. And we were doing this for our own entertainment – not because guys were around or whatever.

It’s one of my favorite things about this picture. Girls like to be sexy for each other. That’s something men often don’t get. It’s fun!

I love each one of these girls separately – I love the expression on the face of the girl whose beautiful legs are trapped between the bars of the bed. I love the Blonde Bombshell in the back – she is the most fabulous thing I’ve ever seen. I love the laughter of the girl standing on the bed.

And then the Tough Girl on the floor. A rockabilly queen before rockabilly had even been invented.

What a great picture!!! Slightly worried that the girl on the bed on the left is about the burn her sorority sister with a cigarette :) Talk about a bunch of long legged beauties!

Oh wow. Didn’t know sororities could actually be fun!

My first year in college I was assigned to an all-girls dorm – the only all-girls dorm on the campus, and I treated it as a tragedy. Everyone else got to see boys in the hallway and hang out with boys in the common room … but me? GIRLS GIRLS GIRLS.

But it was fun and boy, were those girls wild. It was the wildest dorm on campus.

The stuffed animals, cigarettes, booze, riding boots and feather thing on her head – I honestly think they are spoofing other sororities. Every house had a nickname, we called the tri-delts “triple nipples”. My house still gets called the kat house. It’s all in fun.

That would be hilarious if they were spoofing other sororities.

Whatever the case may be, they’re fabulous. I have so many pictures like this in my own collection – where me and my college friends are posed on a couch in various stages of dress/un-dress, and someone’s randomly wearing a fedora, and everyone’s smoking, and everyone is being a character of some kind.

      Girls girls girls.

  6. Makes me want to know what each one of these girls did with the rest of their lives.

Absolutely perfect picture to sandwich between two slices of Camille Paglia.
