… is “guarded”. Any time you put “optimistic” and “the Red Sox” into the same sentence, you must add the word “guarded”.
But it’s a great post. Thanks, Dan. I especially enjoy the analogy in the first paragraph – that the Red Sox are like “that girl“.
You’re welcome of course. Not that I’ve ever dated that girl..that was my…er friend.
Of course, of course.
You didn’t date that girl.
You did, however, get embroiled with that freaky bottom-of-the-well-chick … as I recall …
If by ’embroiled’ you mean ‘terrorized’ then you are correct.
Thanks for the cross post, I’ve discovered yet another person who writes about yet another subject dear to my heart better than I.
Thanks, though I feel obliged to point out that there are a number of ‘Red Sox bloggers’ who write goodstuff. If you’re interested you can find Bambino’s Curse, Cursed and First (Sox and Pats), Rallycuff, Surviving Grady and The Soxaholix on my blogroll. They’re all good.
and I was thinking Marlo Thomas… Shivverss!

I was going to offer a long post on my take on the Red Sox here, but I think I can condense it down to this: numerous recent events in Beantown have left me thoroughly baffled. To an outsider, it’s almost as if a sort of mass hysteria has overcome the team and the entire town…
MikeR: I think you may be right about the mass hysteria.
…except it’s a mass hysteria that’s hardly of recent vintage. Call me proud to be hysterical. :-)
Very true Dave. The mass hysteria part is correct; the overtaken’ is a lot off, as it would lead you to believe it’s a recent development!
Yes. I was born into mass hysteria, basically.
My own unsolicited opinion is that the Sox can beat the Yankees in a post-season series. Yanks are built to win games in the regular season, but don’t have the pitching or bullpen to win in a short series.
The trick is nabbing that wildcard… are the Soxies up to it? Oakland’s looking tough.
